07:43 AM ET 05.16 | As the World Cup quickly approaches, national teams around the world are using various strategies to prepare for a tournament where the majority of games will be played at more than 2,000 feet above sea level. The United States is taking a hands off approach, training in Princeton, N.J., altitude 98 feet. England is heading to a training camp in Austria at about 2,400 feet above sea level. Italy is doing its final preparations at a ski resort well over a mile above sea level. How much any of the special attention will pay off remains to be seen. In all World Cups, stamina is important, but it is likely even more so this year, considering the altitude.

Wow... that sure doesn't make it sound promising. But I think perhaps he's taking into account time zones and jet lag. So if he wanted to train them in Colorado... well, that's another 2 hours to overcome. I think that may make a huge difference for these guys.

Gotta love being up 2 at half. With Madrid struggling, things are going great...

I moved from Portland, OR (about sea level) to Santa Fe, NM about 4 years ago. Had done 45-60 minutes of cardio about 5 times a week in Oregon for years. Having heard so much about the effects of altitude, mostly in relation to teams playing in Denver, I expected to struggle until I became acclimated. Surprisingly, I never noticed any difference. Have met others who had the same experience. I think it is specific to every individual. Research I have seen on the "phenomenon" is inconclusive.

Forgot to mention- Santa Fe is about 6000 feet above sea level.

While the US is training at sea level in the US they secured a training spot at about 4, 755 feet above sea level in South Africa where they will train for two weeks.

So the team can train hard in the US, and then get acclimatized to the altitude in the two weeks before the Cup starts....

Plus it helps IMO that a good chunk of the Confed Cup squad in camp as well so they will have an idea of what to expect when they get to SA

And that should do it! Still don't know why Toure doesn't play more.

Now all that's up for grabs is the relegation spots
