The Blue Jackets are pursuing unrestricted free-agent center Michael Peca, but they aren't likely to get an answer until Monday, at the earliest.

Ha! He is 32 years old now. Why are people interested in him? He is a defensive forward at best that has lil to no offensive ability!

After srewing up for so many years under McLean, they're interested in anybody who can help them regain some semblance of respectability.

good, i'm a ranger fan and i was upset to hear that they were/are close to signing him.

A. He is not needed on the team
B. He is injury prone
C. His game is useless post lockout
D. He is the most overrated player in hockey

I disagree. If he would accept his role, he would be a great 3rd line center. His defensive mindset would allow our young wingers to develop their offensive skills without being a defensive threat, knowing he'll always be in a position to help the D. And we can afford for him to be accident prone(assuming Slats is smart and doesnt over pay him) because we have the depth to fill his spot if he gets hurt. All that with his excellent face-off skills give us a win-win.

He's better for Columbus than he is for most teams. He isn't much good anymore, but that team is horrid. Peca could go in and help Hitchcock teach some of the forwards (or all of them other than Fedorov, really) how to play a little defence. They certainly aren't going anywhere near the playoffs, so having Peca can't hurt them, at the very least. Plus, then they can actually say that they DID sign somebody this off season.

U2NYR27 you said it all.....he should sign with the Rangers sometime this week...

August 20, 2007  02:20 PM ET

perhaps so . . . . . but lets ask the question . . . how can Peca contribute here ? NYR have a decent stable of willing and most able players /prosprospects to perform whatever task would've been bestowed upon Peca

August 20, 2007  03:43 PM ET

I agree with goCanada. I don't think he's totally washed up. Columbus could use him more than the Rangers. NYR are already stocked. Now with Svitov heading to Russia-thank god-he could take his place and perform better. I'm sure he'll contribute more than Svitov did: 7 goals in 76 games.(Wooo, better resign him!) He's better than anyone they have signed of late.

I agree with go Canada and Bman, Peca can still contribute to a team especially the Bluejackets.
