Two sources familiar with the talks confirmed that Montreal GM Bob Gainey inquired about Bruins center Patrice Bergeron's availability approximately a month before the 2007 trade deadline. But the sides didn't even discuss names before jPeter Chiarelli told Gainey he wasn't interested.

Perhaps the thinking was you finished last with him - you could do that without him.
I remember deals for Gretzky, Ryan Smith, Ray Borque and Frosberg all thought to be untouchables. Nobody is untouchable - the price just maybe high.
