Dale Earnhardt Inc. President of Global Operations Max Siegel refused to get in a war of words with miffed driver Dale Earnhardt Jr. over DEI's decision not to allow Earnhardt Jr. to take the No. 8 with him to Hendrick Motorsports next year. Earnhardt Jr. blamed his stepmother, Teresa, who owns DEI, for not wanting to let the number go to Hendrick. He said that she made "ridiculous" requests over licensing revenue and other conditions for Earnhardt Jr. to take the number. DEI, will use the number of Ralph Earnhardt (Dale Sr.'s father, Earnhardt Jr.'s grandfather) next year. "If we didn't have plans to run the 8, then we wouldn't have gone through this whole exercise," Siegel said. Siegel knows that DEI did not win a lot of positive goodwill with the Junior nation.

Hey Max - do you have any idea how this looks? Teresa seems to need some positive press but has gone out of her way to stay in the background and appear to be the evil stepmother? This will hurt as I feel a boycott coming on.

This is a little off topic, but am I the only one that thinks Max Siegel is an extremely talented businessman and one heck of a hire for DEI?

He always seems to say the right things at the right time and you always get the feeling that he comes down on the right side of the issues despite working for an owner that ALWAYS is on the wrong side.

This guy has a terrific sports career ahead of him. It just won't be at DEI.....

August 21, 2007  08:57 AM ET

Also off the subject - there are more famous # 8's,,,,HOF Iron Man Ripken for example. Move on.

August 21, 2007  08:57 AM ET

Max may be a good buisness man, but if he had any common sence he would tell Teresa to let Dale use the 8, it would be good press and an apperance of goodwill tward Jr. and his fans. The bad thing is she will use it next year and probably with Mark Martin, I hope he tell her he does not want to use it, I like Mark, but using the 8 would be a bad thing, I think even though Mark is well liked using the 8 would be too much for some fans.

Max you and the greedy one need to get some serious
help, for your selfs.
Jr does not need anyone from DEI-you better seek help
befor 08.

August 21, 2007  09:40 AM ET

Max is little more than Theresa's lap dog. He a damn attorney to boot so what can you expect..if there ain't $$$$ attached, do you honestly think he is capabale of doing the right thing? I just hope he remembers the old saying, "What goes around comes around." A few more he might try and remember are "Every dog has it's day!" and "Paybacks are hell." Eat doggie Max!

August 21, 2007  09:47 AM ET

Was I the only one that heard Dale Jr. say Max worked his butt off to try and get Teresa to release the number. Must have been a typo.

August 21, 2007  10:28 AM ET

No, Jr did say that about Max. But Max isn't at DEI anymore for Jr, he's there for Teresa. He's basically trying not to bite the hand that's feeding him. I don't think Jr has ever wanted to get in a war of words with Max. I actually think he respects Max, but his complete disrespect for Teresa is what warrants the war of words. But we know Teresa isn't going to do that because somebody would actually have to find her to get a quote from her. This really isn't Max's fight. He was hired to be the public face of DEI, because Teresa isn't capable of that.

NOOOOOOOOOOO not this story again

August 21, 2007  10:57 AM ET

He shoud do what Kobe did and be #24
oh forgot that is somebody else's number

August 21, 2007  12:03 PM ET

While I understand the impact of the number on Dale Jr. personally, and economically, I think his star power and the fact that NASCAR fans love and respect his father, is enough for him to take another number and make it just as important, and just a strong a brand as the number 8.

I also think Max is smart for taking himself out of family business. This problem should only be between Dale Jr. and Teresa.

August 21, 2007  12:27 PM ET

Does not matter who is in the #8 next year (Martin, Smith, Biffle or other) they will get my whole hearted boooooooooooooooooooooo! The better question for DEI in 2008 is if they have news and it does not involve Dale Sr. or Dale Jr. does anyone care? Teresa will learn quickly that DEI is going to be just another team. Can you say Robert Yates?

August 21, 2007  12:48 PM ET

Everybody should boycott DEI merchandise.

August 21, 2007  01:11 PM ET

How bout you build some engines that don't blow up all the time then you can talk numbers. The bit-h has ruined D.E.I.

August 21, 2007  02:35 PM ET

We dont have to boycott DEI merchandise. With JR gone no one is going to buy the stuff. More money for Hendrick!!!! JR will get a new number and all the JR fans will buy all his new stuff. He will make more money!!!

August 21, 2007  03:30 PM ET

I agree tee-dub!! Those damn engines may have a lot of horsepower but are for **** on the track!! What the hell? Jr. blows 2 and then Menard blows another today!!! Those engines are terrible!

August 21, 2007  03:53 PM ET

Jr. Nation
What a nightmare today must have been for you. The two guys your trying to catch finish 1 & 2.
Congrats to the # 2 car, Dodge needs to be in the chase.

August 21, 2007  04:25 PM ET

Max is too chicken to debate the number 8

August 21, 2007  04:42 PM ET

I love listening to all the "junior nation" people ripping Teresa. Here's why. If it wasn't for Teresa there wouldn't be a DEI because she was the driving business sense person behind telling Dale he needed to market his number and his image and make all the money that built that company. Secondly if Dale was still alive and heard you bad mouth his wife he would probably take you out to one of his pastures and whoop your ****. I mean you guys show no class and no respect for Dale Sr's wife. Because lets face it, your idol, the man you guys all use to stand up and hollar about winning races was married to her and you treat her like she's the one that put his car in the wall! Third, none of you would give a damn about Teresa even if she did gave up the number, then you would just**** about the fact that she didn't sell half the company to Jr. and if she would have she wouldn't had to give the number up anyway. Get over yourselves, the freaking number, Teresa and just pull for your driver. Does it give you more of a warm fuzzy if you see him win one of the few races he has won with the number 8 on his car? I mean do you really care if his car is red, black, white or purple? Or has 8, 08, 800, 8000 on the damn door? Or do you just want to see him win for a change? You guys can go ahead and rip me all you want on this topic, I really don't care, I just find it so funny that you guys act like someone just told you that Chevy was leaving NASCAR for God's sakes. It's a number, it belongs to DEI, she made an offer, Jr doesn't like the offer, move on. I know all about the history behind the number and blah blah blah...it's a number. I also find it sad that someone also said they would booo any driver that raced the #8 next year. That's class, boo a driver that has nothing to do with the proposal or the riff between Jr and Teresa. A driver that is just doing what the team owner wants him to do. I mean how pathetic that would be if it was Martin, a guy that always races clean and people would have to look hard to really say something bad about, would get booed by someone because he is driving a car with a number on it that someone else use to drive. That is really sad.

Tribe13:
I'm not going to rip you for speaking your opinion, but that is exactly what it is, your opinion. All I want to know is if you really believe Teresa is the reason DEI has done so well, please, without the Earnhardt name she would not have been able to get where she has, also Dale Sr. was marketing his name long before DEI was built, remember he drove for RCR not DEI. As far as the 8, did you ever think that Dale Jr might have wanted to keep it for many reasons, like it was his granddaddy's number, or maybe for his fans that have been loyal to him, yea they will buy the new stuff but it would be nice if it had some similarities, take the sting off that he is driving for HMS. As far as fans booing whomever may end up in the 8, i'm kinda on the fence about it, yea it's not fair to judge a person because they are in the 8, so Teresa should just put the number on the shelf for a year or so let the noise quiet down a little, it's not like there is not other numbers to use. Another arguement would be that even though it is just a number, in sports a number is not just a number, it is part of who that person is. I don't know if you played sports but if you did you might see what I am saying.
