West Virginia coach Rich Rodriguez warned his players repeatedly last weekend that the media spotlight would follow and focus on them after they earned the No. 3 spot in the first Associated Press college football poll. Just three days later, Rodriguez was forced to deal with his first highly publicized, off-field situation. He suspended two players Tuesday who were arrested early Sunday morning, with transporting and receiving stolen property. Junior college cornerback transfer Ellis Lankster and redshirt freshman linebacker J.T. Thomas have been suspended from the football team indefinitely, pending the legal process, Rodriguez announced in a written statement released through the university.

these kids can't find anything better to do with their free time....or are they just that stupid?

August 22, 2007  08:13 AM ET

Im not that knowledgable when it comes to who played where in college football. But didnt Vick, Pacman, and Vicks little brother also play at WVU. Now, with these players it is looking like there might be a discipline problem at WVU or they just like having thugs play for them.

ATLfan7 I have driven thru West Virginia and there isnt that much to do there. But I think I have go with your second part of the question. They are stupid!!!!

Mike Vick = VT
Marcus Vick = VT
Pacman Jones = WVU

Just to set the record straight dude. Do you dogfight by chance?

August 22, 2007  09:35 AM ET

How about Chris Henry? I think we have found the new University of Miami in Morgantown, WV.

August 22, 2007  09:42 AM ET

What is with all of this having stolen stuff with college football players? I find it really hard to understand. If you are playing at a top football school you MIGHT get drafted. Why just piss on that possibility? The Jets might draft just about anybody so you are all in it! Just weird really. Steal crap later if you really have to. Or not at all...

Thugs...

August 22, 2007  12:17 PM ET

You would think the free cars...hookers...drugs..and athletic garb would be enough to satisfy them...BUT NO....

August 22, 2007  12:55 PM ET

Chris Henry of the Bengals who has been suspended multiple times also went to WV...

August 22, 2007  01:43 PM ET

There must be something in the air for football players in WV. Chris Henry(WVU),PacMan(WVU),Randy Moss(Marshall;born in WV) all have had there share of troubles.

I have a 3 week old TD that only 3 people have voted on b/c of TURFgeek, so please take a look at that. Thanks.

Is WVU a criminal training facility or a college?

August 22, 2007  08:44 PM ET

Yes, PacMan and Henry played football at WVU and both are idiots. Coach Rod even threw Chris Henry off the field during a game and suspended him for the next. So, Coach Rod isn't seeking Thugz he is seeking football players, some of which have a troubled past. I think each one of us growing up have had our share of shenanigans but we outgrow that stage. These guys just don't know when to stop. Coach Rod and WVU is a Class Act when it comes to sports and academics. I took this from this morning's Charleston Gazette and it give a broader view and a possible cause for these type problems:
"Look around the Big East ??? just this preseason camp.

At South Florida, defensive end Woody George was arrested and charged with a felony count of grand theft.

At Connecticut, Randy Edsall indefinitely suspended Andre Dixon and Corey Stringer.

At Louisville, sophomore receiver JaJuan Spillman faces misdemeanor charges of driving under the influence and possession of marijuana stemming from a January car accident.

The Cardinals??? reputation, in fact, is in as precarious a situation as that of the Mountaineers."

The U of L took in Willie Williams, who had a litany of arrests before initially signing with Miami. The school took in Nate Harris, who played for the Cards last season. He had a high school arrest that sent him to the junior college ranks. The U of L program also accepted James Bryant, who was suspended three times last season by UM.
Perhaps some of the Big East coaches feel they have to take character gambles because they can no longer accept Prop 48 cases.

Exactly.

August 22, 2007  09:04 PM ET

Go Rutgers!

August 22, 2007  09:24 PM ET

It is time to take a stand and just throw them off the team. It is that simple. You say "goodbye"

August 22, 2007  09:29 PM ET

Granted the chance of it is close to zero but what if they were thrown off the team and were then found innocent of what they've been accused of?? I think Coach Rod is handling it exactly the way he should. He will wait out the legal process and then make that determination then.

August 23, 2007  07:18 AM ET

Don't forget........

WR Chris Henry-WVU
RB Quincy Wilson-WVU

Both got into trouble....

August 23, 2007  10:22 AM ET

Yeah, I don't think anyone can forget.. But, where did all of the other thugz in the NFL come from??? Wasn't WVU.

August 23, 2007  12:30 PM ET

FLETCH346...

yeah but the crime of commited by the kid from South Florida was rather amusing....apparently he got three parking tickets so the School placed a boot on his car, then he removed it and "threw it away" so they arrested him....who here hasn't thought about ripping the boot off of a car and throwing it in the river.I wouldn't put that in the same category as thugWVU

August 23, 2007  01:15 PM ET

Yeah, it sounds more like the kid from South Florida isn't all that bad.. He's a moron that is running low on the intellect scale. Not paying parking tickets and then taking the boot off and throwing it away??? LMAO!!! I think that's one of the dumbest things I've ever heard!!!! Did he not think he'd get caught???
