NASCAR expects the AT&T logos to be removed from the No. 31 Richard Childress Racing car for the Nextel Cup events this weekend at Bristol Motor Speedway. The U.S. 11th Circuit Court of Appeals issued a mandate Tuesday that its decision to be followed that NASCAR is not legally required to allow the AT&T logos on the Jeff Burton car, NASCAR spokesman Ramsey Poston said Tuesday night.

And AT&T wants its logo in this sportless "sport?

August 22, 2007  01:03 PM ET

What if they just had AT&T in block letters on the hood, no logo? That'd be hairsplitting, but permissible, right?

August 22, 2007  01:21 PM ET

Maybe they can do what the Penske folks (I think it was them) did at Indy a few years ago. Thanks to the Tobacco Settlement, they could keep the Marlboro name on their cars on most tracks, but not for the Indy 500. So, they kept the same distinctive red and white stylings, but no words.

I say leave a big white circle on the hood where the logo currently is.

Or replace it with a "to be announced" sign.

Problem is, I bet NASCAR will have to approve the car prior to it getting out on the track.

So he will be racing in the 31 orange Monte Carlo SS? Is this what the announcers are going to say.

August 22, 2007  02:40 PM ET

I say they put on the hood and the roof,

"NEXTEL/Sprint...more dropped calls than ever before"

or

NEXTEL/Sprint...SUCKS

or

Put the cute little logo that Sprint has changed to inside the White circle that already exists on the hood and then put the traditional red circle with the slash through it. I wonder if NEXTEL had anything in the contract saying you can't bad mouth them either?

August 22, 2007  02:56 PM ET

There'd be nobody left to race if they did.

August 22, 2007  03:02 PM ET

If Nextel/ Sprint wants to control who has what sponsor on whom ever's car; why don't they put up the money and put their logo on that orange car? None-the-less; it still will not match....lol

August 22, 2007  03:25 PM ET

The network isn't bound by the Spring/Nextel sponsorship, and had AT&T comments since the merger, even before AT&T and RCR won at the trial level. The thing is, NASCAR can't enforce the appeals court order because it isn't in effect before the rehearing. If NASCAR orders RCR to remove the logo and then loses on the rehearing, there will be hell (and mega $$$) to pay. And what do the Frances love more than anything? That's right, folks, $$$.

August 22, 2007  04:03 PM ET

How about a big picture of france with a bullseye around it. Or would that tick of Target?

August 22, 2007  04:48 PM ET

How about a big white circle, with "sponsor goes here."

August 22, 2007  05:34 PM ET

Sprint with a line through it. Roamer uses fake meat to pleasure self.

August 22, 2007  05:58 PM ET

A T & T needs to make a elecronic device other than cell phones and they can do what robby gordon did with his sponsors.

August 22, 2007  05:59 PM ET

August 22, 2007  06:07 PM ET

AT&T sucks. It drops so many calls, and the workers there are incompetent. Kinda like Earnhart Jr.

August 22, 2007  10:23 PM ET

drflavio, it has to be a non-commutative device.

August 23, 2007  07:35 AM ET

**** The REAL Irish R#1...I work for AT&T, not in the cellular part but I do work for the company. If you've had a bad experience with one or two or even 10 employees that work for the company I'm sorry but do NOT throw all of us in that incompetent category. Now go back to smoking your ganja you ****.

August 23, 2007  09:10 AM ET

There's a very simple solution. Since at&t is currently the only service provider for the iPhone, why can't they just advertise the iPhone without any at&t logo's on the car...
