Jet lag, turf slowing Beckham
The Galaxy's David Beckham and Landon Donovan and Chivas USA's Jonathan Bornstein were expected to arrive back from Europe today in time to play at least a part in tonight's game at the Home Depot Center. Jet lag is not the only issue for tonight's game. So far in August, the Galaxy has played four MLS games, three on fake grass, and the team has lost five players as a result. No matter how much Major League Soccer tries to emphasize the improved quality of artificial playing surfaces -- the league even issued a positive "talking points" bulletin to its teams this year -- the players know better. Beckham and Donovan, for instance, have pointed out how great a toll synthetic fields take on the body, and that was before Los Angeles' recent two East Coast swings that only reinforced their argument.

No game should be played on turf. Except mini golf.

Although I agree, I just want to point out that Americans tend to think that you must be a wimp for not being willing enough to risk injury due to a dangerous playing surface. Stupid? Of course. Under no circumstances should competitive soccer be played on anything other than grass.

As Jaz stated turf is for mini golf and the "Greatest Show on Turf".

I wouldn't worry about the turf so much if I was Becks. I would worry about playing a full 90 at Wembley, and then flying 10 hours back to L.A. to play against Chivas. It's the schedule more than the turf that is going to end up doing him in.

But the turf isnt going to help. WAT r mls thinking. turf. do they want injure a bunch of players. the ball bounces like your playing on pavement. This isn't indoor. Cmon MLS, your league is getting more popular and ur screwing urself with this turf. by the way did anyone see the galxy red bulls match? 5-4 hell yeah. all 66,000 got their moneys worth and becks was brilliant.

Jet lag is not good neither is turf.We should ban both fron the league. It was a bummer for merry old england that Germany came back and beat em. Are they going to blame that on becks playing in M.L.S.? Or just admit they played cra-py defense?

Why the hell did he play 90 minutes? McClaren is an idiot. He already knows what he can do why waste him in a friendly? The silver lining is if the injury has been made worse maybe he'll miss the important qualifiers which is no more than the idiot England manager deserves.

Hopefully turf will be a thing of the past for the MLS in a few years. I am pretty sure none of the proposed and planned Soccer-specific stadiums are going to have artificial turf.
No matter how great the stuff gets, I'd only want to play on it during indoor season. And even then I do so while cringing.

He could handle the jet lag with Jet Lag Passport (www.jetlagpassport.com). Won't help with the turf though.

Why do you guys talk about Beckham so much? Is no soccer star, he is hust an increbibly functioning marketing operation. If really LA manages to sign ZInedine Zidane you'll see what a real superstar is like. I'd rather have the likes of Zambrotta 100 times playing for Beck. Plus I think that for a serious soccer team he could only be a source of distraction with all that's around him. Why doesn't he just leave soccer and go on with his rising hollywood star career. That's what he's fit for. He can be an actor, his fellow friend Cruise could certainly hel, but soccer? Nope...
I use to be a great soccer far, writing from europe. Noboby woudl want him here, no great club, expect that bunch of globbetrotter from Madrid, but indeed we make a lot of fun about that team in recent years. You'd never see him play for ManU, Milan, Bayern, Barcelona simply because he is not worth it. And he happens to be the most famous soccer player in the world?!? Why??? In other sports the most valuable representatives are real superstars and myths like Tiger Woods, Kobe Bryant or Michael Jordan, Michael Schumacher, Roger Federer...the deserve their status and fame because of what they have done and what they have achieved in their carreers and not only because they are properly advertised.
Sorry but I think that even in MLS there should be a considerable number of players maybe stronger and more effective than Beck, certainly more committed to soccer. To me if MLS really wants to take the big step forward they should start importing one european or south american coaches and second young players from the same continents and the goal for MLS teams should be to try to make some impact on the Libertadores Cup, where the big teams from you continent play.
