Real Madrid's spending spree

Real Madrid went on a spending spree, buying Manchester United's Gabriel Heinze and Chelsea's Arjen Robben for a combined $65 million. But Los Merengues did some selling, too, sealing the Cicinho deal with Roma.

Robben is no surprise, but Heinze is a shock. All we heard was how badly he wanted to go to Liverpool (despite the board telling him no), so for him to be going to Madrid practically overnight is a real surprise.

Heinze to Chelski? WTF, Man Utd should of offloaded him to Madrid since Madrid always buys players on the downside of their careers.

r3alitybytes, wat r u taliing about henize to chelsea, did u even read this. Well tevez lost his friend. he couldve been great if he was at 100% throughout his time here. He only showed flashes of his brilliance at Man U. Chelsea dont really need robben, they have so many other middys. I think he will do better in LA LIGA with more room to run and less hard nosed football and the ability to be more creative.

I hate to double post, but....

I approve of these signings. The Dutch Revolution is in full swing in Madrid and they've got the best Holland can offer. However, it really doesn't matter who is playing for Madrid. My problem is with club management. Calderon is not my favorite guy. I will forever take issue with the way they treated Beckham and then Capello. Capello is a hard-headed, stubborn, arrogant SOB but he wins. He brings glory to Madrid and they sack him for only winning, but not winning sexy enough. I still want to beat Calderon's a.s.s for that. Also, letting Beckham go never made any sense to begin with and benching him when the team was almost out of the La Liga race was pure lunacy. I respect Capello for going against Calderon's wishes in reinstating Becks into the team again.

Madrid now has a team that can rival Barca with the signings Barca made over the summer, but I don't think Schuster is mentally tough enough to deal with the pressure. They lose at home to Sevilla 5-3 and instead of not being enraged at conceding 5 at home he complains about not scoring enough goals. Three goals at home should win you any match!! They will not play well at first even with the new signings. It's going to take some time to adapt with the new players and a change in philosphy from defend first to attack first. The question is how long will it take the fans, media, and eventually management to lose their cool over the slow start?

I'm sick of having a new coach every season. It's embarrassing.

August 23, 2007  02:27 PM ET

I think this makes Madrid a more complete and deep team. With Heinze in the mix, Drenthe could play in the midfield on the wings. With Robben in the midfield, Robinho could finally work his magic on the forward line. Not to mention Sneijder in the midfield.

I agree with MadridistAmericano. It is embarrasing having a different coach every year. Calderon should give up on Kaka and Fabregas. We have quality players and a much more BALANCED team.

HALA MADRID

See, this is the kind of stupid stuff that makes me want to fight Madrid management:

yep i read that. i still think they shoulda stayed with capello. he won them the league.

August 23, 2007  04:33 PM ET

Calderon is an ****... I genuinely cannot stand the man. As for this transfer, its a good deal, but why did they pay so much? Weren't ManU gonna sell Heinze for around 6-7mil pounds? You'd think Madrid would have been able to get him at that price or maybe even lower (since he was obviously done with United). If the combined deal was 34mil pound as I've read it seems they've overpaid (Robben can't be worth in the upper 20's... I'd say even lower 20's might be a tad high for an often injured flopper). Is there really just that much money floating around in Madrid?

August 24, 2007  05:57 AM ET

There is.

August 24, 2007  08:38 AM ET

I do agree with dangermouse29

i don t understand why Madrid payed so much to get Robben.
It was three years ago when he actually played a good game.
And for MadristAmericano, Robben is not the best The Netherlands can offer.

That's still Robin van Persie! He is more an allround player. Strong, devoted, skilled, he has a great right and left foot. far better player.

Sneijder is to light for Madrid, but we shall see. He is from the Ajax school, they are trained to adapt real quick.

Drenthe is awesome, i have seen him with my own eyes!! Everybody loved him, the whole stadium went crazy.

I can't wait when Real will meet Barca. I'm trying to get tickets for that match in Camp Nou.

Visca Bar??a! Visca Rijkaard!

August 24, 2007  09:02 AM ET

Forgot about the great youngster van Persie! You're right, I'd rather have him than Robben but I'm still satisfied with Arjen's signing.

Look, money is no object to Madrid right now. It should be, but they don't seem to mind losing money on players. It doesn't matter though. They tossed out the one factor that would've brought them more silverware this season - Capello. This is how Madrid's season will go....

1) New players, yet another new coach with a new system = another slow/poor start.

2) Fans will wave white hankies at the Bernabeu by the 10th game (all competitions). Media will ravage the coach and front office.

3) Schuster will become frustrated at giving up so many goals and lash out at the media prompting the front office to silence him.

4) The team will start to improve but slowly, too slowly for Madridistas around the globe.

5) Schuster will be fired and replaced by an assistant.

6) Capello, Beckham, Baptista and Reyes will have beer and a laugh.

August 24, 2007  10:20 AM ET

HEy, all Real need now is klaas jun heuntelaar

August 24, 2007  11:05 AM ET

Huntelaar to Real. Possible, word is that Huntelaar and Coach ten Cate don't get along.

But i think Ajax won t let Huntelaar go, they prefer to fire ten Cate. ten Cate has a beef with the Director of Ajax.

van Nistelrooij is good enough for Real.

Wel MadristAmericano,

you forgot 7) Barca will win the title ;)

i think that Backham and Baptista were on the way back. Look at Galaxy they lost again and Becks can't help them...
He is old.

And Capello is a typical italian coach. Promotor of "concrete football / soccer" (thats how we call it in Europe) like Arsenal. Oke they win prices, but so boring. Effective but boring, nobody wants to see that...

It's all about marketing, is has to be good and spectacular.
The beautiful game.

August 24, 2007  11:25 AM ET

Becks is exhausted although he'll never admit it. He's definitely NOT too old and I doubt if he'll play professionally in Europe again. Right now, I can't argue with you about Barca winning La Liga. Real stunk up the pitch in preseason while Barca played well.

I think Real is still trying to get rid of Baptista.

I guess we Americans are more results oriented. We like to be entertained but if it's not winning any games then do whatever you have to to win.

August 24, 2007  12:16 PM ET

Huntelaar is the new Ruud. I hope man u snap him up, they need that predator in front of net to let rooney and tevez do their thang.

August 24, 2007  02:22 PM ET

Huntelaar will goto Arsenal depending on what Bendnter does if he stays b/c he has already shown that Arsenal would be his choice but ryan bable said the same thing and now he is at Anfield

Glad to see Robben get out of the H E L L that i call chelski

Im glad everyone agrees with me in saying RVP is the best dutch player with Kuyt coming in a close second

not to overlook Ruud he is a proven goals scorer but i am talking young talent
