Bears quarterback Rex Grossman praised the work of new quarterbacks coach Pep Hamilton while criticizing departed coach Wade Wilson. "He's come in and specifically worked on the things I didn't do so well last year," Grossman, 27, says of the 32-year-old Hamilton, who coached with the 49ers in 2006. "Stepping up in the pocket, making sure I have two hands on the ball, going through my reads and staying balanced at the top of my drop. "To not have to do that on your own or try to make someone help you with something is just unbelievable."

wahh i sucked last year and its your fault. wasnt joey crying like this earlier in the pre-season?

August 24, 2007  07:43 AM ET

Dude looks like he's got to take a huge dump.

August 24, 2007  07:52 AM ET

So you need someone to help you with what your basic functions are? That explains a lot.

August 24, 2007  08:03 AM ET

Seems easy to understand Rex's troubles last year when he breaks it all down for us.

None of it was his fault! He didn't know what was wrong because the QB coach wouldn't work with him! He just had a coach that didn't want to bother telling him stuff like that two hands on the ball thing.........

August 24, 2007  08:08 AM ET

Sexy Rexy- when your hands can't hold on to the ball, and when you are so eager to force the ball to a receiver on a well-covered route, please do not look to blame your position coach. Look in the mirror.

August 24, 2007  08:10 AM ET

Should read: Grossman rips a huge deuce, credits irritable bowels for poor performance.

August 24, 2007  08:12 AM ET

Yeah, It's all Wade Wilson's fault...sure, It couldn't possibly be due to the fact that Grossman is a mediocre at best Starter in the NFL who crumbles under even the slightest amounts of pressure..that couldn't be it at all. Sarcasm aside, I find it hard to believe that Wilson ignored any of these things, he played behind some incredible QB's and is arguably as knowledgeable about the position as anyone else in the league. This is just Grossman trying to blame his struggles on someone else, I mean what kind of QB doesn't know to step up in the pocket and hold onto the ball with 2 hands and going through your reads? Those are basic skills you should learn in high school, and further more you should know those things through common sense and actually playing the position for the last god knows how many years. Grossman is trash and he will always be trash, when he bombs again this year I can't wait to see who else he blames for his struggles.

August 24, 2007  08:41 AM ET

Wade Wilson was a wanna be QB but wasn't anything but a waste says Barbwa Wawa!

August 24, 2007  08:44 AM ET

What a leader this guy is. "It's not my fault I haven't learned simple fundamentals in the 20 years I have been playing the game of football!". He's a little wuss bag.

August 24, 2007  08:47 AM ET

Anyone who watches football will realize that Grossman is a terrificly talented QB, with very big fundamental issues. He was able to get away with that in high school and college, since the level of competition was much lower than the NFL. Now, in his first full year starting in the NFL, there were a lot of fundamental issues that came up, and yes, Wade Wilson did a bad job of dealing with them, or they wouldn't have been a problem all season.

Yes, Rex had three fumbles against the Colts, but two of them were on snaps, an issue which is easily fixable (and I'm sure they're drilling him all week on it, I don't see it being a problem again). But he's been 17-for-21, and hasn't thrown off his back foot all preseason, which is when he throws interceptions. He had a great shot on the run against the Colts, something he hasn't been able to do, and he's stayed up in the pocket, for the most part, with more confidence this year.

He's a young kid, give him a little time. Pep's a great technique coach, and Grossman has already improved under him. He threw less interceptions than Favre's first full season. His stats are comparable to Eli Manning's over his first full season. The only reasons he gets so castigated is (1) it's a great news story, because he never shies away from the press, so there's always a clip and a quote, (2) he plays on a very talented team, so his struggles are highlighted amidst their successes, (3) he really is talented, has a great arm, and could be a great QB. When he plays well he plays very well, so when he plays poorly, it looks even worse.

what part of this article does he "slam" Wade Wilson? I think he's showing support for his QB coach - that's it. Anyone who pays attention knows Grossman always owns up to his mistakes. Very inflammatory headline.
Rex' struggles are obvious. He's woefully inconsistent. He's started 1 year in the League. 15-4.
Crumbles under pressure? He engineered 2 playoff victories, including one come-from-behind W against the 'Hawks that they won in OT. Don't forget who was just as to blame for the Super Bowl loss - A defense who gave up over 7 yds a rush + didn't have a prayer on 3rd down. As good as their D was the 1st 1/2 of last year, it's a mortal Defense when Tommie Harris isn't in there. Hopefully, we wont have to see that again this year.
But don't get me wrong, this is a make or break year for Rex. Luckily, they play in the NFC. Bear Down.

August 24, 2007  09:45 AM ET

Agreed. Rex caught so much heat because of mistakes made on a high caliber team. However, you put him on almost any other team in the league and his stats look pretty good. Not saying that being young or in the infancy stages of your career means that it's ok to have fundamental issues, but the guy is making forward progress. Give him some time and let's see what kind of output we see from him this year.

August 24, 2007  10:04 AM ET

Cowboysfanforlife...He sounds like the whole Team down there in Jonestown that is still blaming Parcell for all their failures last year. Not sure who they blame for the failures of the last eleven years. The coaches no doubt.

August 24, 2007  10:35 AM ET

Rex is the worst starting QB in the NFL.

August 24, 2007  10:47 AM ET

I read the article and he hardly rips Wilson. All he says is the comment about "making" somebody help you. Yeah he's probably referring to Wilson but it's hardly ripping him.

August 24, 2007  10:52 AM ET

poopster, that is such an ignorant statement; many teams would run after Rex if they could. Look at his stats, look at his results, and look at how, with minor help, he could solve a lot of the technical issues. He is far from the worst. Sure, it's hard to believe an NFL QB has technical issues, but honestly, he's always been good enough he's gotten by without that kind of muscle memory training. His technical deficiencies are in a way a testament to his natural ability; if he'd had less ability to cover up for his foibles, then they would have been corrected long ago.

I don't think the Bears are willing to give up on him yet, and I'm not either. If he bombs this year, he bombs, and that sucks (though nothing new for a Bears fan to have a QB bomb), but as long as he continues to show improvement, I say he's worth it. It will be interesting though to see how his contract situation plays out at the end of the year.

August 24, 2007  10:53 AM ET

Oh, and yeah, this article is terrible. The only reasons it was printed is because (1) everyone loves to hate Grossman, it's a story that sells, and (2) it made for an eye-jerking headline. Inflammatory drivel.

August 24, 2007  10:59 AM ET

Here is another good EXCUSE. Maybe Rex is color blind and can't tell the difference between the dark jersey and the white jersey, so he throws to whom ever looks open. Rex stinks and he knows it, the Bears certainly didn't get to the Super Bowl because of any contributions he made. I guess we can blame the O line, the coaches, President Bush, the N.F.L., and the Iraq War on his desicions to throw into double and triple coverage. All of his turn overs are their fault... Whatever.
