The Penguins will start 2008 in cool style by playing an outdoor game in Buffalo on New Year's Day. Several NHL officials confirmed Friday that the scheduled game between the Penguins and Sabres on Jan. 1 will be played at Ralph Wilson Stadium, home of the NFL's Bills.

I would love to think this would be a success and only hope it comes off as well as the Edmonton Montreal game did a several of years ago

Global warming might prevent this from happening.

August 25, 2007  11:00 AM ET

Beer-n-drums, just keep Al Gore away from Buffalo and the waether will be fine. The man is so full of hot air he causes global warming all by himself. LOL

the nhl doesnt have too many viewers as it is, having this on new years is stupid, its a college football day, wtf

August 25, 2007  01:03 PM ET

There is no such thing as global warming in Buffalo in January

August 25, 2007  02:35 PM ET

thast so f'in tight.... id go who cares about college footballl

August 25, 2007  04:48 PM ET

yeah i would definitely go...

August 25, 2007  09:02 PM ET

It woked for Edmonton, but of course, Edmonton fans are ridiculously insane! They love their Oilers and will sit in 40 below weather without shirts just to watch them play, but are they as crazy in Buffalo? We will find out! I know it will not be 40 below over there, but still....!

August 25, 2007  11:29 PM ET

Haha college football... Put it this way, at least when you watch hockey, you can count on each play lasting more than 3.33seconds. Curling has longer sets compared to football plays. Outdoor NHL match in New Years? HELLZ YEAH!! Sure a lot of football fans with attention spans less than 4 seconds would be disappointed but for a change you might actually catch a sport where the players actually perform more than the commentators.
Oh and yes... that was a jab at football
I'm ready to get flamed now

I truly love hockey and the HURRICANES but I think they should have the outdoor game somewhere in Canada

August 26, 2007  01:07 PM ET

Having it in Canada will do nothing for the growth of hockey in the United States. You can always count on the Canadiens to watch the games and this one I know they will. By having two "American" teams play in the US outdoors more Americans may be tempted to watch. Hell more people in Buffalo watched the Stanley Cup finals than in Anaheim..

August 26, 2007  02:30 PM ET

This will definitely be a success. If its going to be anywhere in the US, Buffalo is the right place.

August 26, 2007  03:01 PM ET

Screw the bowl games. Very few provide the game that the hype in the media predicts. They should show "Mystery Alaska" as a lead-in to the game. Besides, if Steeler and Bills fans will show up in the cold, you can be sure Pens and Sabres fans will.

August 26, 2007  06:07 PM ET

Personally, I'd like to see two outdoor games. One in Canada, one in the US. Each game between a Canadian and American team, that might bring in more fans from each country.

August 26, 2007  06:46 PM ET

donbrandt, I highly doubt this hockey game will do anything for the growth of hockey in the United States. It might have a high impact locally, but that will be it. Do you really think somebody in South Cal or Arizona or Atlanta will give up college football to watch a bunch of nuts freezeng their buns off in far away Buffalo?

August 26, 2007  07:29 PM ET

I am SO there. I don't care how **** cold it might be. Last year on New Years Day it was 50 degrees in central New York and was around the same temp in Buffalo. Who knows how cold it will be.

August 26, 2007  07:32 PM ET

thats tight

August 26, 2007  07:33 PM ET

i cant wait.. when is it...just kidding

August 26, 2007  07:33 PM ET

NHL is so much better then football...

August 26, 2007  10:38 PM ET

You mean the NHL (no hit league) might actually break a 1.0? woooooow!
Look out MLS , WNBA and pro bowling. Thanks Gary B.....
