Notre Dame quarterback Jimmy Clausen, talking with reporters for the first time since arriving on campus last January, confirmed Friday he underwent arthroscopic surgery this past spring to remove a bone spur from his throwing arm. He wouldn't comment any further on his injury but said he is competing to be the starting quarterback.

No way he gets the job now.

August 25, 2007  11:13 AM ET

I hope he does get the starting position. He looked pretty good at the Army Game and I want to see that action in the UM game.

August 25, 2007  11:25 AM ET

I hope Jones gets it because he gives ND the best chance to win.

HERE COME THE IRISH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Doesn't matter who is behind center, the IRISH will play better than most think they can.

i think clausen should wait a year before he starts.dimetrious will help the team out better as a whole.he's alot more mobile than brady was and will still be able to make throws when he has to.

August 25, 2007  02:07 PM ET

i thought ND just gave him the starting job...

August 25, 2007  02:10 PM ET

August 25, 2007  02:36 PM ET

The way he spoke made it sound like he got the job though...

August 25, 2007  04:57 PM ET

It's Demetrius. Demetrius Jones will start game one.

August 25, 2007  05:37 PM ET

Sharpley.

August 25, 2007  05:41 PM ET

He released that info himself ... ? What, is he giving himself an out in case he doesn't get the starting job?

August 25, 2007  08:10 PM ET

how did that stay a secret this long?

August 25, 2007  09:47 PM ET

How 'bout we wait until September 1st?

August 25, 2007  11:13 PM ET

Your relatives don't measure how good you are. See Eli and Peyton Manning.

August 26, 2007  05:47 AM ET

I still think Jones will start and he fits the offense that Weis is running this season.

August 26, 2007  12:58 PM ET

I think the most improved unit on the team this year will be the Defense. Hopefully the offense can put some points up.

August 26, 2007  04:03 PM ET

Hey Tennesseeguy, you saw two Clausen's at U.T. it could be three for three cause if this kid doesn't pan out . . .

I honestly believe that Weis needs to redshirt this kid and start Jones, or Sharpley (but I prefer Jones) this season.
