Gibbs no closer to Toyota switch
Don't expect a Toyota announcement that Joe Gibbs Racing has joined the manufacturer's stable next week when the Nextel Cup Series heads to the backyard of Toyota's base in California. Joe Gibbs Racing President J.D. Gibbs said no announcement is planned for the Aug. 31-Sept. 2 race weekend at California Speedway and his team is still mulling whether to extend its contract with Chevrolet.

Would be "GREAT" to see Denny win the Championship in a Toyota rather than a Chevy! Maybe his motors wouldn't blow-up...

That's true, his motors wouldn't blow up. But that's just because they're not turning enough RPMs to do any real damage.

any motor can blow up....it is not just fords or chevy or toyata....... look at how many moving parts are inside the motor...(actually it is not a motor it is an engine) but if gibbs goes to toyota I see them making big gains in the hp dept...they would have to to get gibbs.........I hope he leaves chevy makes it better for the rest of the field...

Mikey was out two laps into the first race. Getting Gibbs would be a real ace for Toyota. Waltrip and Co. never had their act together from day one. Even though I hope Gibbs stays with Chevy, but if they switch, at least Toyotas are made by American workers. And with NASCAR becoming IROC, you can't tell them apart anyway.

Hey noybyj,
Haven't we already seen a couple of Toyota engines blow this season? I pretty sure we have. And as drflavio309 put it, there are so many moving and inter-dependant parts at those high RPMS, any manufacturer could have one blow. I'm still uncertain whether Tony is willing to drive a Toyota (sorry guys..not trying to start anything). I'm wondering if Gibbs is holding off on the switch to Toyota until after they re-sign Stewart.

The biggest issue my not be Gibbs switching. Apparently at least one Gibbs driver has a personal services contract with General Motors. Apparently Tony Stewert has a contract with GM that invovles all his race teams and apparently is a sticking point in Gibbs negotiations with Toyota.
As for the Toyota's blowing up. There have been For'ds that have blown up, Chevy's have blown up, and Dodges that have blown up this season. Some of the biggest and most important engine blowups this season have not been Toyota's.
As for other comments. Mikey screwwed up. Not because he became the face team of Toyota, but because he tried starting a 3 car team basically from scratch. The resources were to thin and that, combined with the learning curve for the crews and the driver of the 00 car made it more difficult. Add in the top 35 rule and it made it nearly impossible for the Toyota teams to compete.
Only 1 Toyota team started the season in the top 35 in owner points and one had 6 weeks to race on a past champions provisional. The rest had to get in on speed.
Toyota's have run very well at times this year. Heck at MIS (home track of the big3) they had 2 top 8 cars at the finish. Toyotas have 6 top 10 ten finishes this year and half of them have come at MIS. Toyota will get better as time goes on. They will need a big time team though and right now I don't see Gibbs being the teams to make the move.

Hey chapmaja,
Thx for the info. Good to know and it certainly is relevant to Gibbs making any changes. And as for Toyotas, I guess they can only get better. But they wil also face much the same trials and tribulations in qualifying for races next season if NASCAR doesn't change the rules like "Mikey" is politicing for. He really does go overboard with his A _ _ kissing of NASCAR on Windtunnel though. Regards!

Mikey is not kissing up to Nascar. It just is not smart for anyone, anywhere, to bash their head company in any field, especially on national TV. If one listens closely, Mikey knows an awful lot about Nascar rules and processes.
I agree starting 3 teams for a new car make was a formidable task, but he is still a good driver. That top 35 rule has made it difficult for him, but TOYOTA will do better next year. This year was a learning curve and lots of bad luck for MWR did not help., but he is not the first Team to ever have a bad starting year, and that includes all car makes..

Hey Little E.....No doubt Michael Waltrip knows a great deal about the rules in NASCAR. But have you heard him on WIndtunnel with Dave Despain? Holy Moly! Ever since he got nailed by NASCAR at the beginning of the season for that substance in the intake manifold, he sounds like a spokesman for NASCAR whenever they make some ruling, controversial or not.
And no question the top 35 rule is a bear to overcome and Toyota has been getting the brunt of the rule this year. I don't doubt for a second that inevitably Toyota will have gotten past their engine problems and they be more competitive. Then the question will be whose on the bubble all the time once Toyotas get in. Somebody suggested they kick the number up to 40 cars instead of 35. WOnder how that'll work?
