09:12 AM ET 08.26 | Decibel levels at NASCAR races are dangerously high, according to recent studies by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health. The noise also makes it more hazardous not only for fans, but also for drivers, crew members and everyone else who spends time at a racetrack during a NASCAR event. A co-author of the studies, Dr. Luann E. Van Campen, said Niosh viewed Bristol as a worst-case situation for noise because of the bowl-like stadium track surrounded by stands that rise 21 stories.

I am shocked, SHOCKED, to learn that 43 un-muffled cars each boasting upwards of 700 horsepower rolling around in a circle in a partly-enclosed space could produce unsafe noise levels.

the noise is part of the fun! DUH!! It says on the back of your ticket that any injuries occuring aren't liable with nascar. you are a visitor and fan at your own risk. wear earplugs! thats what my brother does b/c it hurts his ears.

Frankly I'd be more worried about the carbon monoxide than the sound. So you know what you do? You DEAL WITH IT! For god's sake! You're at a RACE!!!

Thank you, Captain Obvious. Still no cure for cancer, right?
If you don't like the noise, then don't go to the races. Don't go to concerts. Don't go to bars on weekends. Don't mow the lawn. Don't listen to iPods with the official earbuds. Don't drive with the windows down.
Every day, we are all dying a little bit more. That's just the way it is, and avoiding life will not save you from death. It is not a hard concept.

I think the'yre talking about the drivers and teams, lots of drivers are losing their hearing...Fans are not around cars all the time like the drivers and the guys who build them cars are!
Then again who cares if you go deaf is your life is on the line every single weekend...

If nascar thinks they can make a $$ off of this they will . You will get a pair of ear plugs with your ticket and the price of a ticket will go up $10.00

Watch, now some pain in the +++ senator will introduce legislation to regulate noise at race tracks followed by Hillary Clinton claiming she's always been a NASCAR fan.

Why do you think the vast majority of people wear hearing protection of some sort at these races. Maybe they should ban my job due to the high noise levels in the mill i work in.

hey dr. mufflers will never fly, I will not go to a race if I don't get to feel and hear the roar of those engines, it's what makes NASCAR what it is...

Hey Guys,
How about passing out earplugs to those who are worried about loosing their hearing. The sound of those engines is part of racing that makes it all that much more fun. Take it from someone who does a have a significant hearing loss from loud engines, motorcycles and shooting guns. But you know, its was alot of fun along the way. Thank goodness they invented hearing aids (because selective hearing is also great).

Wow, there is a lot of noise at a NASCAR race. I'm shocked to know that. Wow. What else can I say other than passing out earplugs at the racetrack is not a good idea. The tracks should not have to provide hearing protection to the fans. The fans should be smart enough to read the tickets and get hearing protection if they want it. Having a stand that sells earplugs would be one thing, passing them out is different.
I did not wear earplugs for the MIS races I've gone too. That was my choice. If I were to go to Bristol I would wear hearing protection because the facilities are so different and the noise carry is so different.
