Pitt coach under pressure

As Dave Wannstedt enters his third season as Pitt football coach, he does so with a sense of urgency to restore the glory he promised upon returning to his alma mater. Talk of winning another national title has been replaced by lowered expectations. For now, a winning season and bowl berth would suffice. Wannstedt has done all he can to be an avid fundraiser, goodwill ambassador and, perhaps most important, persuasive recruiter for Pitt. He has the unwavering support of the university's top administrators, who don't want to compromise their credibility by cutting corners.

The only thing he hasn't done is a good coaching job. He sucked with Chicago, he sucked with Miami ... and he gets another chance to jack up another team?!?!? Stick to fundraising and goodwill ambassador issues!

Wannstedt is pathetic. He ruined the Dolphins and now he is currently doing nothing at Pitt

He has been getting good recruiting classes to Pitt. Even with West Virginia being better the past few years, he still has out recruited the Mountaineers, and they fight for recruits every year. As a Mountaineer fan I'm a little worried about having to play ol rival Pitt for the 100th time last game of the season. I think WVU has a good chance at being undefeated only needing a win to play for the title going into that game. I'm sure that Pitt would like nothing better than to knock WVU out of a championship game in the 100th anniversary of the Backyard Brawl.

give him 2 more years and then evaluate

A college coach needs 4-5 years to get his own recruits and lay a solid foundation instead of dealing with another coache's players......

August 26, 2007  09:25 PM ET

He wasnt a solid NFL coach but like Pete Carroll will be a better college coach.....He needs another 2 years before they axe him......

August 26, 2007  10:41 PM ET

All good points- except Wandstedt sucks at being a head coach. Just like Dirk Koetter is an excellent offensive coordinator (see Boise State) but a horrible head coach (see Arizona State).

"Wannstedt has done all he can to be an avid fundraiser, goodwill ambassador and, perhaps most important, persuasive recruiter for Pitt."

What they didnt mention and it speaks volumes by its omission, is that he flat out has not been a good coach, the major job requirement, above and beyond the kudos he has gotten for being everything else above.

He has NEVER lived up to all the BS hype that has surrounded him at all of his "stops." When is everybody gonna wake up and realize......he's not head-coaching material?

August 27, 2007  02:29 AM ET

They should have hired him to coach the Steelers. He could not have done any worse than their pitiful attempt at defending champs. I mean damn...one TD in 2 games vs Ravens? And the SB year..they won by a single point in the last 1:30 at home (when most starters for Balt were not even able to start or play due to injury mind you) and lost by a fg in OT in Balt. I wonder what fantasy land this city lives in. Hire a guy who sucks as an NFL coach...same results as hiring an NCAA coach who was good there. Remember Steve S's attempts at NFL? Laughable at best...like this joker's entire coaching career.

Fire him. He hasn't produced in a weak league behind West Virginia and Louisville.

August 27, 2007  10:35 PM ET

Get rid of da bum some he could be an assistant in the NFL.....

August 27, 2007  10:47 PM ET

Fire him now.

The Big East is a lot stronger than people think. It's not just West Virgina and Louisville. Rutgers is for real, and South Florida is a very tough team no body wants to play. Both have good defenses. (something lacking around the rest of the Big East). If Pitt can return to what they used to be and Cinnci, UConn, or Syracuse can step up, I think they could be one of the better conferences. I think West Virginia and Louisville could beat anybody.

August 27, 2007  11:20 PM ET

Pitt will be back soon.

Hey ravensfan, Steve Spurrier can coach circles around this guy, even on a bad day. Yeah, Spurrier failed in the NFL, but his record in the college ranks is terrific. (love him or hate him, etc.) This guy at Pitt has never even been "average."
