Caddie changes Mahan's mindset
In his younger and more excitable days, Hunter Mahan sometimes approached golf with a clenched fist and a slammed club. When he hit a bad shot, he would add a negative comment. Sometimes, he did it for the good shots, too. Mahan, 25, said his turning point came in June at a 36-hole United States Open qualifier in Dallas. He shot a 73 in the morning and signed his scorecard. His caddie that day, Neale Smith, pulled him aside and told him that his negativity was ruining him. "It was five minutes outside of some pretty stern stuff," Smith said. "I said, 'That attitude is not going to get you playing good golf.' I told him out of care as a player and as a person. Our relationship is in a good-enough place where he took it well. He took that information and ran with it."
