Penn State QBs use PlayStation

Jay Paterno is melding the world of bits and bytes with that of hits and highlights in his Penn State quarterback meetings. It's all made possible by the newest addition to the coaching staff -- a PlayStation 3. The idea is to give the Penn State quarterbacks more work on their playbook, which is loaded onto a Madden football game for use in the video game machine. "It will almost be like watching film. Changing plays on the fly, it's just a fun thing that's going to help us on the field," said Anthony Morelli.

Great idea. The more experience the better. When Denny Hamlin moved to the Cup series, he had never never seen the track at Pocono. He played one of the video games, however, and learned all the shift points. Hamlin became the first rookie to sweep the races at Pocono. Video games can really help.

Joe is so old when he is watching it on the big screen he thinks it is a real practice.

Who knew I was training?

August 27, 2007  09:10 AM ET

I wonder what team Joe Pa runs with on Madden 08....

August 27, 2007  09:17 AM ET

Pilots have been using flight simulation for years. It's cool that sports is doing the same thing. I'm surprised it's taken this long, unless teams have been doing this and have kept it quiet up till now.

I guess those 6 players who got arrested must have been have had Grand Theft Auto in their PS3 instead of NCAA.

Go figure

Joe is probably like my dad. When my dad hear's me playing Fifa Soccer he thinks there is a real game on. He calls me from the next room asking, what channel is the Man. U game on. Then I reply, dad I'm just playing a game.

I am sure Joe probably sees NCAA Football on the screen and thinks, man why is Michigan sacking my Q.B. on a monday. Oh, wait is it Monday?

August 27, 2007  09:56 AM ET

Update Michigan just scored again. Jay is about to mute the T.V. because he has just heard the Victors for the 7th time. Somebody hit the reset button, quickly. Simulate!! Simulate!!!

August 27, 2007  10:33 AM ET

GREAT IDEA. I wish I could do that for my High School team.

August 27, 2007  10:54 AM ET

I am surprised more teams do not utilize this?

August 27, 2007  11:26 AM ET

EJ
You just made my morning, thankyou.

August 27, 2007  11:42 AM ET

Is it really football if it is small eleven football?

August 27, 2007  12:34 PM ET

And how do you simulate trying to run an offense after you've been slammed to the turf repeatedly by a 260-pound lineman?

August 27, 2007  12:47 PM ET

I know we have a xbox 360 in our locker room but instead of NCAA we have FIFA b/c its a college soccer team and we use have customized it to our formation and tatics and it reall helps some of the players understand where they need to be on the field, it really help you with your postioning

August 27, 2007  02:35 PM ET

Your welcome, Hammered.

August 27, 2007  03:25 PM ET

Oh wait. Afternoon practice has started. Penn State is now playing Wisconsin. Morelli has just thrown an interception before the half. Coach Paterno is walking by and has just heard the interception call. He thinks it's pass interference. He is looking for a referee. He spots someone in a striped shirt, and off runs Paterno. Jay is now running after him going Dad no, it's just a student. Dad slow down, Dad don't push him...Dad No!!!!!!!!!

By the way it's Wisconsin 17, Penn State 0.

August 27, 2007  04:22 PM ET

What a friggin joke. FIRE JAY PATERNO NOW!!!! As if penn state's offense wasn't predictable enough, now any coach can just do his scouting by telling his 12-year-old to play a friggin video game.

August 27, 2007  04:43 PM ET

Well I'm surprised that more colleges haven't gone to this sooner. The inner-city high school team I follow down here in Dallas started doing this a couple or three years ago with a Playstation 2 and it's worked out really well for them. They bought memory cards and gave all the skill position players copies of the playbook on each card to take home and play on their own playstations.

It seemed silly to me at first when I heard about the high school here doing it, but it's been working out very well.

August 27, 2007  05:30 PM ET

Morelli probably completes more passes as himself in that game then he does playing.

August 27, 2007  06:16 PM ET

It was only a matter of time. Football isn't rocket science and video games can now mimic game scenarios.
