38

SPEED's Bob Dilner reported that Robert Yates Racing has asked NASCAR if they could transfer the No. 38 to Hendrick Motorsports in 2008 for Dale Eanrhardt Jr. to use, the No. 3 in honor of his father. The late Dale Earnhardt who ran the No. 3 a few races in 1981 and then from 1984 until the 2001 Daytona 500 and won 6 of his 7 championships using No. 3. No word what number David Gilliland would switch to, but RYR still has the license on the No. 28, last used in 2002 with Ricky Rudd and has used the No. 90 in the past.

Class act from a class guy

August 27, 2007  08:50 AM ET

That is cool, Yates is definately a class act.

This sounds great and is a cool new chapter is Jr.'s life. He's able to honor his father and grandfather all in one and leave the rest behind. Thanks Yates!!!!!!!!!

A terrific gesture from an owner that "gets it".

If only the CEO of TEI understood things as clearly. Yates will pick up a huge load of good will, and free publicity, if this story is true.

Such a nice gesture. Hearing something like gives me hope that there are still people in this country that are not always worried about #1. Junior is right by the way. As much as everyone is upset that he will not be in the 8 next year. Only family can rip on family. Good race Saturday night Junior. Hope you enjoyed your Sunday.

I can't argue with anything already stated here. What a great move by a class act of an owner. NASCAR is still a family sport and this is part of the family doing something else for another part of the family. I'm sure at some point it will be repaid.

I too have to give kudos to RYR.
I like the idea of putting the #28 back out there too...it's been too long.

I was personally routing for the 81 as Jr has some history with it. Does this help all those with 8 tatoos? Just shove a 3 in front of it.

I could not agree more, Robert Yates you are ###111

I like that idea. 38 would be a great combination of his family legacy. I hope Nascar, Jr and RYR can make it happen.

WHAT A SUPER IDEA!!! I LOVE IT!!!

I felt bad for Jr when they asked him about the #8 controversy before the race in Bristol. I appreciate the "She's family and noone else can say bad things about her" comment but you could tell he was biting his tongue awfully hard.

Excellent idea !! covers everything important to JR. ...Impressed with RYR. Hope it happens. .....agree with all the positive comments ahead of mine.

This will be awesome good publicity for RYR, a great gesture, good for #8 fans, good for #3 fans, and as Ghost said, just plain smart thinking from someone "who gets it".

August 27, 2007  04:16 PM ET

Sweat, now RYR can put the #28 car back out there. Hopefully Hendrick puts Mears in the #5, it means a heck of a lot more than the #25 I'd think.

August 27, 2007  05:12 PM ET

Michael Vick vs Robert Yates... Hmmm. Maybe the NFL could sent its bad-boy millionaires to RYR for a year so they could learn some balance. But, would hate to put RYR thorugh that. The Yates organization and drivers just ooze class and they have only deepend my respect for the entire organization.

August 27, 2007  05:17 PM ET

jr is not all that.who cares what number he has. his dad /m.martin/d.w. rusty and other drivers had different numbers. its not the number its the driver

August 27, 2007  05:43 PM ET

Why has nobody noticed that the 38 actually represents Dad/Grandpa? 3 For Big E, and 8 for Ralph. This is better than the Jr. Nation could hope for!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This makes me want to cry......
