Drivers rave over new Bristol

News flash to the NASCAR world: Bristol Motor Speedway is no longer a slam-bang, temper-boiling, dog-eat-dog racetrack. Newly reconstructed and reconfigured, the concrete racing surface is now three feet wider -- just enough room on the high-banked little half-mile oval to relieve the drivers of being gladiators on wheels. Rave reviews were the driver consensus. Tony Stewart, never one to stifle his criticisms, called the reconstruction "an ace job" after finishing fourth. No longer must they knock one another out of the way, or jam one another through the corners. Nor did anyone climb from his wreckage and gesture angrily and/or obscenely to another he blamed for wrecking him.

Bristol races are always great TV viewing and Saturday was no exception. I hope we do see some heated drivers and discussion though, dont tell me Tony was totally happy - yikes.

Beautiful race track!!!!! I did miss the old Bristol style racing (banging under the lights) however I have to admit Sat was exciting as it was a really good race and good pit strategy. Good job Bristol.

Good race. What was Waltrip thinking as he was holding up the leaders for about 15 laps. Maybe the commentators were right that he was just trying to get some TV time for NAPA. If Toyota wins one this year it wont be from Waltrip racing.

Waltrip almost wrecked the 3 leaders...and Kahne lost a position on that act. That may have been the highlight of Waltrip's season - yup

again I reserve comment on mikey... I will say that I thought better of him before the race.....

That race put me to sleep , The people who decided to repave the track should have to lick the track with there tongue's till the old surface shows up so we can have a real Bristol race next year !

hahahahahaha. Dude you are so funny.

August 28, 2007  01:44 AM ET

old surface is gone you idiot they took it all out its pure concrete now with no asphalt underneath yankee idiot

That race sucked! While the track may be better, the COT ruined the race. That bumper doesn't allow the drivers to lift up the car in front of them and move them out of the way. Once again, watered down racing. This race did not live up to the hype no matter how much anyone says it.

I so agree with YankeeboyDD. They've ruined what used to be the most exciting race in all of racing, Daytona, Indy, be darned. I don't care what anyone says, we want smack down, fender crunching, body slamming, paint trading, well spinning, fist flying, real Saturday night racing. We deserve this. Why, Dale Sr. is spinning in his grave right now saying, "You mean to tell me we only had a couple of wrecks and nobody spun anyone else out to win? Shameful!" BIG FAT YAWN, NASCAR.

As bad as I hate to say it I agree Saturday Night was a real sleeper, but I enjoyed the race and thier ability to go 3 wide from time to time (several actually) I did want to see the "Short Track Tempers" flare yet again. It seems this is the only track those tempers flare up at. I know the drivers want to keep thier cars in one piece but come one bump someone for god sake. OH and I think Martin Truex should have been held a lap for Rough Driving, that was just awful what he did to Ricky, a bump is a bump but he SLAMMED that car. I hope to see Martin this weekend sporting a black eye, the IRON MAN unleashed a FIREY blow.
