NFL draft going prime time?

According to an industry source, the NFL has had preliminary discussions about moving the first round of the draft into prime time on Friday. The remaining rounds would be conducted on Saturday and Sunday. The thinking on this issue appears to be twofold. One, carrying the opening round in prime time means more viewers would be available to watch. Two, some NFL officials believe it would be a good idea to give teams time to decompress before Round 2.

Yeah, right. The 1st round is WAY too long for prime time. To make it fit timewise they would have to SIGNIFICANTLY lower the pick times (say 3-5 minutes) which I think few teams would go for. This year's first round of the draft took a record 6 hrs. 18 min. That won't cut it for prime time. Even if you start at 7 PM it won't be over til 1 AM.

This sounds right and seems to make a lot of sense. The only thins is like theCleric said they allow too much time in between picks as is. That would need to be changed for it to work well. Maybe start at 7 instead of 8.

I never knew that prime time lasted six hours.

Learn something new every day.
Like Roger Goodell is boring.

3/4's of America would be in bed by the 10th pick

ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ

Actually if they started at 5:00 pm it would be over by 11:30 pm. That would be easier and each team would get its full 15 minutes.

I know it's crazy to like to watch the NFL draft, but..........I LIKE IT! At least the first couple rounds anyway. Maybe it's the fantasy player in me. All I know is I can't explain why I like it, I just do. If the first round was on prime time friday, I probably wouldn't watch the rest on saturday and sunday.

If they really want to do this, Cleric is dead on. They would have to give teams 5 minutes on the clock instead of 15 minutes if they wanted the 1st Round to start and end in prime time.

I love to watch the draft... probly more in the second day... they talk more football... they already know were the number 1 picks are... they don't pause to see who was picked they just post it on the ticker... they seriously hit EVERY team and its never boring cause they just drafted sombody... and you get to hear the new coaches for the first time with the boadcasters... watching the draft is the best part of the off-season... cause its in two day ... free agents drags on and on...

May 4, 2007  03:26 PM ET

i count down the days til draft day - man, it is seriously long though. who can stay focused for that length of time. they do each pick, 15 minutes... just drop it down to 10 min's per pick, and in the first round they are potentially knocking off 2 hrs 40mins worth of dead air.

May 4, 2007  03:56 PM ET

the first round took over 6 six hours, primetime does not last 6 hours. The nfl is making a mockery of the Draft. Keep it the way it is. Shorten the time inbetween picks and all will be good.

I love the draft. I watched from pick #1 to Mr Irrelavant. Can wait for the season, but the draft is my Superbowl of the off season. I think i'd like it to stay the same, but if it means the draft starts one day early and I get to have three days of the draft then i'm for it.

May 4, 2007  04:20 PM ET

Yeah i'm a draft convertee...i used to never care but now i've watched the last 3 drafts and have found them totally entertaining. I was on the edge of my seat waiting for the lions to make thier first round pick! I would watch it in prime time.

May 4, 2007  04:35 PM ET

genius. most people will stay up to watch there team, then stay up to see what rival teams do. the only bad thing is, there won't be as many NYJ fans to boo at the teams pick.

May 4, 2007  04:47 PM ET

Hm, not true. Jets fans would be there...oh they would be there.

May 4, 2007  05:26 PM ET

As if the NFL Draft coverage isn't overdone as it is (broadcast on two separate stations?), I for one give this idea a thumbs down. But, seeing as the NFL is on a step-by-step program to take over all of TV and eventually the world, this wouldn't surprise me. This idea is as good as playing a regular season game in London...oh wait...

May 4, 2007  05:31 PM ET

Well, I think playing games outside the U.S. during the regular season is a veeerrryyy bad idea.

May 4, 2007  05:49 PM ET

Big Ben, I actually agree with you, The NFL is the NATIONAL football league, not the INTERNATIONAL football league...keep American products American!!! WOOO HOOO!

May 4, 2007  06:08 PM ET

This won't go anywhere. The number of idiots who would waste their time watching something this boring is maxxed out. Having it in Prime Time would just push something more interesting off the air. Anything would be more interesting than the draft (and I'm a fan). Just think how boring it would have been if the media didn't have Brady Quinn to torment for 19 rounds.
