Hokies fans asked to applaud foes

Virginia Tech athletics director Jim Weaver sent a letter to the Tech community Monday urging respect for opponents, part of a movement on campus that calls on fans to applaud visiting teams before games. The idea is Tech fans should support schools that supported them in the days and weeks after the April 16 massacre.

Or, throw batteries

August 28, 2007  11:06 AM ET

Very respectable. Good idea.

August 28, 2007  11:17 AM ET

Agreed. Good idea. Of course, once the ball's kicked off.... LOOK OUT!!

August 28, 2007  12:17 PM ET

Does this request include stomping on opponent's legs while they're on the ground?

August 28, 2007  12:39 PM ET

Class act idea. Hard to believe it will stick through October, let alone in week two...

August 28, 2007  01:15 PM ET

It's a great idea, personally I just don't see how it can happen. I've been to a Tech game multiple times before and the fans are known for their hostel environment. It's what puts Lane Stadium as one of the hardest places to go into and win a game. I'm not saying that it's not going to happen, I just find it difficult to believe that when you get thousands of drunk fans into that stadium, that they are going to remember to cheer for the other team.

I guess this idea beats the original idea which was a call for fans to wait after the game and chant "2, 4, 6, 8, who do we appreciate?".

August 28, 2007  01:34 PM ET

Surprisingly, the original idea of waiting until after the game and having fans chant "2, 4, 6, 8, who do we appreciate?" was rejected as it seemed insincere.

THE TRUTH,

West Virginia games are where you'll find fans throwing batteries (and lumps of coal, beer, etc.). Throwing items from the stands gets them prepared to set their sofas ablaze after the game.

August 28, 2007  01:53 PM ET

....errr...why the hell they throw batteries?

August 28, 2007  02:55 PM ET

Thanks El Diablo..that's who I was thinking of actually...them "EER Fans

August 28, 2007  03:21 PM ET

Yeah, and we as Americans were nice and respectful to all our countrymen for all of about two months after 9/11. Nice idea but I think we've seen how far a good deal of people let tragic events impact positive change in their lives. More or less a group of 18-23 yr old kids. But who knows, maybe they'll prove me wrong. That would be nice.

August 28, 2007  04:03 PM ET

El Diablo, you're so right.. Welcome to the most intense stadium in the Nation, Mountaineer Field!!! That's why Beamer said that he'd never come back.. Intimidated and scared. Eeer fan and proud of it!!
Usually the throwing incidents don't happen uless incited.. Like Vick throwing the finger to the fans and cussing them.. That's where you cross the line with Eeer fan... then Good luck.
Don't come to the house and talk trash to the hosts.

August 28, 2007  09:19 PM ET

i like the idea, i just hope this is only for one year because i am sure VT's fans like to boo the opposing team as much as i do.

August 28, 2007  09:26 PM ET

I think it's a nice idea and I wish it would catch on elsewhere.

August 29, 2007  07:28 AM ET

Why in the world would you want that to catch on.. I realize these are special circumstances but in general it's called home field ADVANTAGE. If the fans are cheering for the other team that kinda lessens the advantage part of that. I know I wouldn't want my fans cheering for the other team and on the flipside, the opposing fans booing always got me excited for the game.

cool
let's try this in Philadelphia

August 29, 2007  04:25 PM ET

I feel for the VA Tech community and the hideous crime that was committed there but there comes a time when you have to let the past be just that, the past. An announcement can be made before every home game thanking all those for their support.. But, come on.. Telling the fans to applaude against a visiting team??? Sounds to me like the VA Tech Athletic Director and Staff are probably Democrats.

August 29, 2007  04:27 PM ET

I stand corrected: Telling the fans to applaude for the visiting team..

Where is that Black Diamond Trophy? I don't think the Mountaineers would even think it right for applause from the Hokie Nation and vice versa. I agree with Fletch.
