The Dodgers have genuine interest in Esteban Loaiza, according to a National League source. Loaiza is due $7 million in 2008, the final year of his three-year, $21 million contract. For the A's, that's a ton of money. For other teams, that might be well worth the risk.

Does Oakland have anyone on the team that panned out? Moneyball my ****!!!!!!!!!

August 28, 2007  11:10 AM ET

How are we going to get out of this one,

August 28, 2007  11:34 AM ET

Everyone they've developed that panned out signed with someone else once the rest of the league took notice. Oakland is like the farm system for the entire majors.

August 28, 2007  11:58 AM ET

Right on, mushroom man.

As are the Royals nine in KC.

August 28, 2007  01:19 PM ET

Never quite got why Loaiza got 21 mil to start with.

August 28, 2007  01:26 PM ET

I agree Fung, the A's grow the best pitchers and then they play for a few seasons with the A's until they become great then they leave and go play some where else and are not quite as good as they were with Oakland.

August 28, 2007  01:27 PM ET

Loaiza is the future fat Sid Ponson. Another mediocrity paid millions to throw a ball and wind up on the disabled list repeatedly...21 million? who signed this guy?

August 28, 2007  02:25 PM ET

Seek psychiatric care.

August 28, 2007  04:48 PM ET

Loaiza is not a terrible option for an NL team in a pitcher's park. This actually makes quite a bit of sense.

August 28, 2007  04:52 PM ET

Desperation, thy name is the Dodgers.

August 28, 2007  05:57 PM ET

Are the Dodgers serious about improve their relief pitcher Sounds great but thats not what they need they have Broxton and Siato if a starter can make it to 7th inning and three out of the five starters have provn they can do that consitently Penny, Lowe and Billinglely have proven that.

Though as a team the Dodgers are unable to score runs with runners in scoring position leaving the pitchers with no run support where more releif is needed to keep them awake.

If the Dodgers had some power other then Kent and Martin 3 times a month in the line up they may have the wild card lead right now instead of trailin

August 28, 2007  05:59 PM ET

Yes my grammer sucks but I trying to make a point...

August 28, 2007  06:03 PM ET

Loaiza was outstanding down the stretch last year, and has pitched very well in two outings since returning from the DL. If the Dodgers can get him without trading top prospects, I say do it.

August 28, 2007  08:42 PM ET

sweeeeeeeeeeeeeeeet

August 28, 2007  09:19 PM ET

The level of baseball knowledge on a site for those trying to get the inside scoop is amazing. 53 wins in the 4 yrs before this with an era around 4. That gets you 10-13 million a yr now, so Beane's signing at the time was smart. Plus if they trade him, they'll get a prospect for someone they signed as a FA on what now in hindsight is a good deal. And in 2 starts this yr, he's got a 1.8 era, granted 2 starts. Not all a GM's moves are gonna pan out. But compared to most Beane has a great track record. One or two bad trades or deals in 10 years is not bad, and the time is always contending. They have been hit incredibly hard in recent years with injuries.

August 28, 2007  09:59 PM ET

Loaiza=not good?

August 29, 2007  09:58 AM ET

Did aaronstevens tell Kerry to take a seat,

August 29, 2007  01:27 PM ET

you might as well call darrin driefort up and see what he is doing

August 29, 2007  04:59 PM ET

Perhaps is an act of desperation, but so what.. desperate times call for desperate measures and the Dodgers are fading fast without reliable starters.. plus is not costing them a prime prospect, just cash for next year... the Dodgers should be big enough to man up and take the extra mills .. the wild west is wide open, it doesn???t take much to make a run, if Loaiza has 3-5 good starts and they make the playoffs the move would had paid on its own

It's the right move. In fact, I'd kill the Dodgers for NOT doing it. Major League pitchers don't fall off apple wagons everyday. 7 mil is a small price to pay next year for quality innings now.
