Sophomore tight end Andrew Quarless and backup defensive back Willie Harriott will miss the next three to four weeks as a punishment for underage drinking citations, Penn State coach Joe Paterno said yesterday. Quarless, 18, and Harriott, 20, are still working out with the team.

Now that is class. Willing to lay down the law when we all know most other coaches probably would have just overlooked it, or given them a few extra laps at practice.

Kudos to Joe Pat.

yeah, punish a kid for doing exactly what the other 30,000 students are doing in happy valley - having a cold one with friends. Its not like they were at a bar or frat house making a scene.
I, too, like how Joe handles these things, but this is a shame.
I hope they are able to return to the team.

Is it just me or is Penn State No.1 this preseason so far in off-field trouble dating back to last April? Good for Paterno however for the discipline.

August 29, 2007  08:32 AM ET

Be lays down the law for under age..but guys that get into assault cases are still playing pending further investigation?

August 29, 2007  08:49 AM ET

Maybe they were at practice, and decided that they played better after drinking. Lord knows, I'ma better College Football 2007 player after drinking.

And, yes I know 2008 has come out but I haven't bought it yet.

August 29, 2007  08:54 AM ET

Drinks make it easier for me to go for it on 4th and 18, haha....

August 29, 2007  09:27 AM ET

First thing is they knew it was wrong, second the season starts THIS WEEK!!!!!!!!!

YES 90% of college kids drink, but they are not getting a free ride to school.

August 29, 2007  09:54 AM ET

I got a free ride through school, and I was drunk every day. Hell, I'm hung over right now.

August 29, 2007  10:00 AM ET

I played ball on a scholarship and still drank, its not like you cant do both...

August 29, 2007  10:09 AM ET

Thank you. Why according to Sexton, I thought I was the only one. Thank you xxx84xxx.

August 29, 2007  12:15 PM ET

Wahhhhhhh?

August 29, 2007  04:15 PM ET

break the rules pay the price

August 30, 2007  01:44 AM ET

thats dumb. everyone on the football team drinks. everyone knows that everyone on the football team drinks. why punish two guys just cuz the cops saw them?

August 30, 2007  12:34 PM ET

Suspeneded for underage drinking, but the kids with felony charges are still playing. I guess that's because Scirrotto is a star on defense, so Joe Pa lets him play anyway. makes no sense at all.

August 30, 2007  03:31 PM ET

Good choice, JoePa.

August 30, 2007  05:58 PM ET

What's that on your chin, Joe?

August 31, 2007  08:53 AM ET

I agree, that is FIRST CLASS...We need alot more coaches like this.

September 5, 2007  09:54 PM ET

Joe doesn't differentiate based upon whether or not someone is a star. He reviews the trouble athletes get into, and if he thinks they have violated laws or team rules, he suspends them. If he thinks the charges are false, he doesn't. Joe has been doing this for years. suspended all-Americans, such as Giuseppe Harris (Franco's brother) for an entire year. Harris's only infraction was falling below Joe's own academic standards for the team. Harris was eligible under NCAA rules. Like Joe or hate him. But don't try to claim he metes out discipline based upon whether someon is a starter. JoePa is not Bobby Bowden.

September 5, 2007  10:06 PM ET

Everybody at Penn State does this...it doesn't make it right, but that needs to be taken into account.

That said, nice work by Joe. He places a lot of emphasis on discipline, and I'm glad he's maintaining that policy.

I would like to retract my comment about Giuseppe Harris in my previous blog. I received two calls waking me and my wife up in the middle of the night last night by someone who would not identify themself, but claiming that I had written something about them that was completely false. Since this is the only blog that I have ever identified someone in, and I do not have anything but my memor to go on, I will withdraw the comment. What I wrote was based upon my own (admittedly, often faulty) recollection of events from nearly 30 years ago. If I was incorrect, which I am quite willing to admit may be the case, I apologize. (My point was about JoePa, not Mr. Harris. That point I stand behind.)
Now, whoever called me, please stop the harrassing calls in the middle of the night.
