Mariners to extend slugger
The Mariners and outfielder Jose Guillen are close to completing a contract extension. The deal, apparently for three years, would replace the one-year mutual option that would have kept Guillen in Seattle for the 2008 season. Probably not: Guillen is a fairly common name in the Dominican Republic.
I'm concerned this is continuing the trend of the M's rewarding a single very good year with a long-term cotnract as opposed to a body of work. That's the sort of thinking that keeps them on the wrong side of the standings; not that Jose Guillen isn't a good ballplayer, but I'd like him to prove himself more.
