USC assistant denies fighting dogs
USC assistant football coach Todd McNair said Wednesday that reports detailing his two 1990s convictions for mistreating dogs did not "accurately portray" what actually happened. McNair, 42, said both cases stemmed from his failed attempts at dog breeding. Law enforcement authorities who investigated the 1996 case paint a different picture. They say "all indications" showed the former NFL running back was involved in pit bull fighting. Coach Pete Carroll said he still would have hired McNair even if he had known about his convictions. "I wouldn't have recognized it as an issue," he said.

Hold on a second...didn't the other story regarding this topic say that he was never convicted? So why does it say the Pete Carroll "would have hire McNair even if he had known about his CONVICTIONS." This is really starting to look like a smear job by the L.A. Times.

It's nice that Carroll wouldn't have recognized it as a problem. Nah, it's not a problem. All he did was abuse some dogs, and possibly fight them. No big deal Pete. Nice how the guy said it was a failed attempt to breed them. Yeah, I believe that. I think I'll believe what the law enforcement folks said before I believe someone convicted of cruelty to animals. I'll bet it was a plea deal to lower charges.

"USC assistant denies fighting dogs"
how heroic! the man can fend off rabid dogs.
and coach football!
Or, he's denying fighting a dog, which could be cruel or intriguing depending on the size and breed of dog.

Okay, now Spanos is out. You know, the wheels appear to be coming off a bit at old USC.

There's McNair's side, he claims it was "only" neglect of the dogs. Then there's the reality, because he WAS convicted of 17 counts of abuse of animals. Now, I don't know where he comes from, but from where I come from, a dogs face being "horriibly mauled", a direct quote from detectives on that case, does not fall into the category of "neglect." Not to mention multiple cuts, a broken leg on one of the dogs, worms, under fed dogs....well, you get the picture. If one of my animals so much as has fleas, I take them to the vet or address it myself. This was abuse, and detectives say they know he was breeding these dogs for pit bull dogfighting. Now, he wasn't charged for dogfighting, but he was for abuse. He may call it "neglect," but the courts did not! Someone is in denial, here. Also, does Pete Carroll claiming he would have hired him anyway even if he had known about the convictions mean he believes it was "only" neglect, or does he realize the convictions were for abuse, and if so, does he not feel abusing animals by a person applying for a job at a college at least warrants investigation? You tell me....Is McNair in denial, as well as Pete Carroll

why would this not be an issue? Vick's life as he knew it is over. Why is it different for this guy? The vilification of Vick sets a pretty tough precedent.
Dogfighting is the most horrible thing to ever occur on the face of the earth.
We are not talking about merely stabbing someone to death at a nightclub. That kind of stuff is forgiveable.

don't get carried away by my sarcasm... I do actually think that dogfighting is a pretty weird hobby. Maybe Madden 08 would have been a better choice.

Pete Caroll, " IF " he was aware of the situation, as reported by JP723, took a bad decision hiring this guy in the first place. What makes it even worst is that he makes it sound as if the whole story is insignificant because it had nothing to do with football...
He should show better judgement in the future, after all is he not the moral authority when it comes to football at USC, if so, it might be best he gives a better example to his entire staff and players... Or maybe it should be the athletics director's prerogative to see that he does...
I am disapointed, all and all Mr Caroll showed poor ethics and bad judgement.

Anybody who fights dogs is either a coward or viciously ignorant. And for Carroll to back him up is sick.
Yo, Pete- McNair's conviction may not be relevant to football, but you're stupid if you think that's the end of the story. It's part of your job to hire guys to coach and be in close contact with impressionable 18-22 year old kids. THINK next time before you speak.
