Word is trickling down early this morning that Columbus Crew midfielder Danny Szetela is set to sign with Italian Serie B side Brescia. There are conflicting accounts about this situation, with sources placing Szetela in Italy while other sources say no deal is done yet. What is clear at this point is that Szetela's transfer future will be determined in the next 24 hours.

What happened to Roma, and Everton and all the class sides that were reported yesterday? While playing in Europe, will help his cause with landing on the U.S. Senior Squad, I'm not sure Brescia will improve his play all that much.

August 30, 2007  09:38 AM ET

His play has slipped since returning from the U-21 WC.

August 30, 2007  09:40 AM ET

Or was it U-20? Whatever....

August 30, 2007  10:48 AM ET

maybe if he goes to brescia and does well, roma or another serie a team will notice him again and snap him up on a loan or a summer transfer

I assumed he would sign with someone like Roma and then get loaned out to a team like Brescia for the rest of the season, hopefully he can impress their, are there any Crew fans around, I've heard has largely been a disapointment for them, even before his great performance at the U-20?

KopHawk83:

I am a Crew fan and have been to many of the games this season, and you are right ... he has done little to impress us here in Ohio. So to say I was shocked to hear about him trying to make a move to Europe would be an understatement. I still think he'd be better off playing another season along Schelloto. Heck, my mailman could play in Serie B if he spent another season next to Guillermo, too.

:D

I would love to have seen an American in a big Serie A team. If he plays well in Brescia, he'll get major playing time and a lot of the big boys in Serie A (the Milans, Juve, Roma, Lazio, Fiore, Parma, etc) will keeping an eye on him

Apparently, according to Greg Lalas at goal.com (also writes here from time to time) claims that he has agreed to sign with Newcastle, though he won't make the move until January (probably a good move), turning down an offer to leave for Roma immediately, I wish him luck at Tyneside, hopefully he does better than Gooch did...

August 31, 2007  05:19 AM ET

Nice draw for Arsenal.

August 31, 2007  10:01 AM ET

I'm hoping for Newcastle! I'd love to have an American to cheer for at my favorite EPL club. Especially if he's coming from my favorite MLS side.

August 31, 2007  12:38 PM ET

is there some reason the CL draw is relevant to the article about Danny going overseas?
