Injured Beckham to join England

David Beckham sprained his right knee in a clash with Pachuca defender Fernando Salazar and had to leave the game after only half an hour. England plays Israel and Russia in consecutive Euro 2008 qualifying games Sept. 8 and Sept. 12, needing to win both, and Beckham was expected to fly to London on Sunday to join the team. It appears he still will be able to do so. After receiving treatment, he returned to the Galaxy bench in a suit and tie to watch the overtime session.

A sprained knee if it is not too bad is just a nagging injury that time & rehab will take care of. England is short a few of their stars but I don't think Beckham should play. I think they handled his ankle all wrong too. If they waited 2 more weeks when he got here, he would have probably been atleast 90%. However the hype forced him to play. The injuries he has are nagging type of injuries that time & treatment take care of.

Since he cares more about the CAPS he is going to play for England. He will just do it at the expense of the team that is paying him.

Also, congrats to Pachuca. Like I said, yesterday when that team has a trophy on the line they do not lose.

August 30, 2007  09:26 AM ET

EJ,
L.A. wanted that trophy I think more than Pachuca. And they had Pachuca on the ropes pretty much the entire second half. Calero just had a great game stopping shots.
Anyways, Beckham is not going to England just to get CAPS for his national team. England needs to win these two upcoming matches in order to qualify for the European Championships of 2008.
However, with a knee sprain he shouldn't play and if he does he needs to expect to at least play some more MLS games when he comes back (assuming he doesn't injure something else).

While I watched Becks sit on the bench so distraught I couldn't help but think the only thing he was concerned about at that moment was how his injuries would affect his place in the England squad. I'm sure he wasn't near tears because he wouldn't be able to help this sorry Galaxy side finish 3rd from last in the league. Next year he'll come back with a vengeance I'm sure. But will he have enough around him to get the job done in LA?

If it's up to Lalas they'll be in trouble.

August 30, 2007  10:37 AM ET

A new coach and new, better players are needed at L.A.

August 30, 2007  10:49 AM ET

soccernet says he could be out for up to 6 weeks. how can he play for england then?

August 30, 2007  11:09 AM ET

this was a really good game. i watched it on telafutura, and it was a real nail biter. i am still kinda laughing that mr. PK himself botched the winning penalty shot.

Anyways Pachuca should feel pretty confident against MLS teams in PKs, they have beat Houston twice before last night. Capt. Juan Sparrow is an excellent keeper and kept his team in it the whole second half. Cannon was impressive as well.

August 30, 2007  11:15 AM ET

Could have been a lot worse for DB. At first I though it was his ankle again. I thought it was a pretty entertaining game only because Pachuca let it become that with inconsistent play. Whenever they decided to put pressure on the Galaxy D-men, they folded like a cheap tent. They are as porous as Swiss cheese. They are horrible in their own end.

BTW, what's with LD's penalty kick d*pey ritual. I thought he would take his shoes off and kiss his toes also. IMO, if he would concentrate in kicking the ball instead of going through that endless stupid ritual, maybe he'd score more. It's irritating to watch and gets the goalie all juiced up and motivated to stop him. (DC)

Yup, US and Spanish media report he's got a sprained knee which could keep him 6 weeks K.O.d. That's the rest of the MLS season and he misses the Euro qualifiers for England.

OH well, come back strong next season Becks!!!!!

August 30, 2007  12:02 PM ET

Great second half game.Galaxy had alot of shots on goal. It's funny because after the first half I though the Galaxy didn't stand a chance. Then the second half came.Way to step it up! Becks is busted up.He needs alot of time to heal right!

August 30, 2007  12:55 PM ET

This sucks, I was going to see him in late September against the Wizards, now it looks like he is out, BUST, now I get to see the epic showdown between the two biggest **** on the USMNT, Landycakes and EJ, who will be the biggest fish in the small pond that is the MLS...
