OU seeks recruit funeral waiver

Oklahoma will ask the NCAA for a waiver to allow a booster to raise money for the funeral of a football recruit who was killed last week. Herman Mitchell, a 6-0, 200-pound linebacker, verbally committed in June to play for OU, but the 17-year-old from Westfield High School in Houston was shot to death Friday after getting into a fight at an apartment complex. Soon after, Oklahoma booster and Houston resident Adam Fineberg began raising money for Mitchell's family to help defray the player's funeral costs. Fineberg had raised about $4,500 before university compliance officials told him his actions violated NCAA rules. He has since refunded the money.

Please give them the waiver. It seems like a good gesture by the folks at O.U.

Ask yourself this? If he were not a player would there be any problem with maing a donation to help this family?

This is where the bureaucratic BS of the NCAA needs to be revised!!!!

The Truth........No. If he wasn't a player....he wouldn't get it.

For once in my life I will say good Job OU!

The NCAA had sure as heck better let them raise money to help pay for this kid's funeral. I'm sure Zero U's compliance department is just taking every precaution after what they went through recently, but good grief if there's something in the idiotic NCAA rulebook about stuff like this then the rulebook needs to be re-written.

It's just mind-boggling that a booster would not be allowed to help raise money for this kid's funeral. If the NCAA rules against this then they are even more heartless and incompetent than they've been given credit for.

AS long as the funeral expenses are accounted for there should no reason to not allow donations. Better yet, those fat ****e$ at the NCAA should open up their wallets.

The NCAA has some good rules about recruits and money, the NCAA has some bad rules about it. But THIS is nothing short of simply asinine. I'm no fan of the Sooners by any stretch of the imagination, but kudos to them for trying to take care of one of their (almost) own. I hope the boneheads at the NCAA let you proceed.

I hope they get the waiver. If they don't, is there an NCAA rule against fans of football donating money to a generic account? It doesn't have to be tied to OU in anyway - but I'd throw in some cash if the booster can't do it. Sheesh.
