Notre Dame visit left recruit cold

Defensive tackle Darryl Richard could easily have been preparing to suit up for Notre Dame instead of Georgia Tech in Saturday's season opener. Richard seriously considered a scholarship offer from the Irish, so seriously, he said, that Notre Dame was in contention until the final couple of weeks. He took a recruiting visit to South Bend, Ind., for the USC game in October of his senior year. That visit eventually helped him pick the Yellow Jackets. "It helped [Tech] that it didn't get under 10 degrees too often down here in Atlanta," said Richard, who is from Destrehan, La., just west of New Orleans. "It was pretty cold up there [in South Bend] in October for me. I thought about what January and February could feel like."

Well, what the hell Richard did you think it was going to be 90 degrees in South Bend in October? Oh boy, how did this guy get by the NCAA Clearinghouse?

August 31, 2007  09:02 AM ET

ok play at a traditional power and get great pro coaching and exposure or pass it all up for warm weather, intelligent....

August 31, 2007  09:06 AM ET

That's the Irishs' fault..they should have shown him the tropical side of Southbend........

August 31, 2007  09:10 AM ET

What a ****. I guess the University of Wisconsin wasn't too high on his list. I guess if he gets drafted by Denver, Cleveland, New England, Green Bay or any other cold weather team in the pros, he'll immediately pull an "Elway" and asked to be traded to a warm weather team or a team that plays in a dome.

August 31, 2007  09:39 AM ET

Aw poor baby. It was too cold. I'm sure this guy isn't the toughest player. He will probably get hurt in the first play when someone blocks him. He will be in tears crying for his mommy, while I laugh hysterically.

August 31, 2007  09:52 AM ET

He does realize that the classrooms are heated, right? I mean, that's why he's going to college, right? To get an education, and have football pay for it. What am I missing here? I'm as befuddled as Woody Allen at a Village People Concert.

August 31, 2007  10:09 AM ET

I think he saw first hand just how ugly Notre Dame girls are + he's trying not to hurt their feelings.

August 31, 2007  10:24 AM ET

those notre dame girls will be making more money than your life is worth once they graduate though buddy.

August 31, 2007  10:31 AM ET

What a wuss! Toughen up! What will he do if he has to play a cold weather team on the road?

August 31, 2007  10:31 AM ET

Here's ANOTHER BIG TIME SPORTS STORY FROM FanNation. I mean the AJC.

Did you read the part about " I felt at home @ GT"? IF I was offered A FREE RIDE to ANY COLLEGE the FIRST question I woud ask is

What's the weather like?

August 31, 2007  10:49 AM ET

I like ND , in fact they are my fav' college team, the history and tradition etc, ...but the weather must be so much better down in Georgia, more time for outdoor stuff, parties, bbq, girls in skimpy clothing etc, rather then feezing in a dorm room and if your 18 or 19 that stuff counts surely

August 31, 2007  11:17 AM ET

Wow. The morons are in full force today. First of all, none of you probably know what it's like to be a DI athlete at a major program, I do. The kid has choices, very good choices as a matter of fact. He doesn't have to blindly go to ND. Sure you would, but the best you could do was post comments on a sports board and talk about people that do have choices.
Secondly, I'm missing the part where ND alums are dominating the NFL if you want to compare programs. GT alums aren't dominating either, but I'm missing the part where being a ND alum equates to rippin up the league. Thirdly, GT is just as good academically as ND, it's a great school. Fourth, like kjlast stated, Atlanta is a great place to be if you're a young man. You have better weather, beautiful women and lots of culture etc. Atlanta is a great city and lots of fun, with many more options in the city. If you have ever been to South Bend then you know that there's no comparison to Atlanta. Of course, the weather was a big part of his decision, but I'm sure he looked at the whole pacakage and made an intelligent decision. It's possible that he was being polite as well. Maybe he saw other things that he didn't like, but he used the weather as his largest issue in the media.

It's moronic to say, "How will he prepare himself for the NFL by not going to a colder place?" Well, Miami, Florida, Florida St, USC, and Texas guys seem to scrap by just fine genius.

August 31, 2007  11:35 AM ET

Sounds kind of shaun alexander and why he didn't go to michigan.

August 31, 2007  11:52 AM ET

I can understand that he doesn't want to be in the cold. I'd rather be in the cold than in hot humid weather but that's me. He'll have to suck it up if he is good enough to get into the NFL and ends up being drafted by a team in the north that has cold winters where your balls shrink back up into your belly.

August 31, 2007  12:04 PM ET

tr: I'm not your buddy + you obviously dont know **** about me. I dont know how much my life is worth, but i know i went to law school w/ a lot of ND dogs, a couple whom may have played D-tackle during the Bob Davie tenure. Keep being a Hoosier, you tool.

August 31, 2007  12:31 PM ET

You're not the only one that was recruited and played d1 dude, so stop tryin to elite...

August 31, 2007  12:36 PM ET

A wise decision kid!

August 31, 2007  12:43 PM ET

its cold in the NFL as well

August 31, 2007  01:55 PM ET

Black folks.....they tropical folks...they dont do cold weather...leave that to them europeans

August 31, 2007  06:18 PM ET

Hope he doesn't get drafted in the NFL someday. Green Bay, Buffalo, Baltimore, Cleveland or NY may be even worse than Indiana. I hope all the NFL teams remember that come draft time.
