No refunds for Beckham matches

Now that David Beckham is sidelined, the ramifications extend far and wide. Planned exhibition matches with Beckham and the Galaxy have been scheduled in Canada and Australia. In MLS, meanwhile, clubs maintain that there will be no refunds if Beckham can't play. "Not only would it be rare, it would be unprecedented," said John Koluder, a spokesman for the MLS club Real Salt Lake. "We have no plans to go that route. Unfortunately, there is nothing that fans who bought tickets for those games can do. We cannot guarantee that David Beckham. . . will play on that day. That's the chance the fans take."

This is dumb. The MLS is not a sideshow.

August 31, 2007  09:09 AM ET

Ohhh thats quite a disappointment..kinda like Beckham himself

RIP SOCCER

August 31, 2007  09:16 AM ET

Hey, that happens. He didn't show for the Dallas SuperLiga game either but it was a fun game and the atmosphere was great!!
Injuries happen.

August 31, 2007  09:39 AM ET

Isn't it about time we end this USA Soccer experiment? We just don't care.

August 31, 2007  09:52 AM ET

Amen

August 31, 2007  10:05 AM ET

You don't care because YOU don't understand the sport. It's a generational thing anyways....he's not expected to make it the number one sport here in a country full of all kinds of sports.

Did you hear something Bartman??

August 31, 2007  10:35 AM ET

well, at least its not dead in the rest of the world. oh yeah, most of these kids growing up r playing soccer even more than football, bball, base ball. so its going to get more popular in the future.

August 31, 2007  10:35 AM ET

stadiums r sold out when stars like the toothless brazilian show up

August 31, 2007  10:42 AM ET

Not great PR really is it, they should have refunded part of the money from those tivcket sales to anyone who wanted to hand in their ticket...the people who bought tickets to se Beckham and who are now going to miss out are hardly likely to think too well of the clubs in the future...not much chance of them buying season tickets next year after being treated badly this season.

August 31, 2007  11:27 AM ET

Do the Giants refund money when Barry Bonds doesn't play? Do the Colts refund money when Peyton Manning doesn't play? Do the Lakers refund money when Kobe doesn't play?

August 31, 2007  11:30 AM ET

Exactly Anthony!
It's a sport and you take your chance if you buy tickets to see just one player. Even though he didn't play at the Dallas game is was a GREAT game with GREAT atmosphere AND A PACKED HOUSE!

August 31, 2007  11:30 AM ET

If people don't return to watch MLS games because a start player got hurt then they aren't wanted anyway. That's not the kind of fan the league needs. They don't hold athletes in other sports to a standard where they should play while injured so Beckham and the rest of MLS shouldn't be held to that standard either.

August 31, 2007  11:36 AM ET

Do those teams jack up prices or force people to buy packages just because of a certain player? No. This is an unusual circumstance. But at the same time, people have to understand it's always a risk.

The TRUTH presents more highbrow dialogue from Jeeves BS:

"u wanna go, fine **** e n twit. i told u lay off once and ur still grilling me. ill will hack ur computer. i will do it. i no how. im **** e n smart. ill go in through ur account and find out where the **** u live. and then ull get it"

August 31, 2007  11:49 AM ET

It does suck but it is part of sports. No team can 100% guarantee any player will be on the pitch! Anyone can be injured at any time.I see both sides.

August 31, 2007  11:57 AM ET

He's waiting for movie deals soccer-fans, wait and see. Why else would he come here? If he's SOOO good, then he would've stayed in the more competitive league's, no one can argue that. He's old and nowhere near as dominant as he used to be, so , he came to America where there was a LOT of money to be made and movie's, where more money can be made.

August 31, 2007  12:00 PM ET

yeah, i did say that. and im not takin it back cause u are a ****

August 31, 2007  12:00 PM ET

A million things could've happened to him. He could've died in his sleep but people still would have already bought jacked up tickets to see him. Oh well. He's not Beckham 2.9Xj3P0 - he's not a robot.

August 31, 2007  12:00 PM ET

He is SOOO good. Lots of huge clubs in Europe wanted him and Real Madrid wanted to re-sign him in June. He's here to generate more interest in the sport, a sport that is the number 1 sport around the World except here.
He could've made tons of money staying in Europe.
