Jones to start for Notre Dame

At this point it's getting tougher to believe that anyone other than Demetrius Jones will start at quarterback for Notre Dame in Saturday's season opener against Georgia Tech. Irish coach Charlie Weis maintained his code of silence Thursday, even after Jones' high school coach said the athletic sophomore was taking the most first-team practice snaps. On Thursday, Jones' coach at Morgan Park, Lexie Spurlock, tiptoed to the edge of confirming the decision. Spurlock talked to his ex-quarterback that morning.

It has to be Demetrius Jones. It might be Clausen eventually but this is the guy you go with against Tech. Tech likes to blitz and by all accounts this kid is athletic enough, that he wont be a sitting duck in the pocket.

Why is the media talking to Jones' ex-coach? Who made the contact? If the media did first, then they're grasping for anything. If it was the coach, that's even worse, ND football has nothing to do with him and it seems like a way to get his name in the paper. I'm guessing Weiss is either ticked off or could care less, but we won't know until he tells us that he's telling us right after he told us.

YES awesome news headline!!! I love waking up and reading about Notre Dame. I love reading how Weis was milking this so ND could get even more publicity. I just love ND even though for some reason people really don't like them.........I wonder why??!?!?

<sarcasm>

Congrats on your decision Chuck! Now go get your losing (.500 at best) season underway and let the rest of us read about and watch some REAL football. Domers...you suck!

August 31, 2007  09:41 AM ET

8-4 now. If Clausen or Sharpley started, it would have been 6-6 or 7-5. They will definitely win Georgia Tech, Michigan State, Purdue, Navy, Air Force, Duke, and Stanford. I say they upset UCLA to go 8-4.

August 31, 2007  09:41 AM ET

la-dee-frickin-da. But it is nice to finally know who it is that will get honored with a pounding into submission in front of 100,000 screaming fans at Beaver Stadium.

August 31, 2007  09:47 AM ET

GO IRISH....all you bums will see.....by the way, ND-31 Penn St -21

August 31, 2007  10:04 AM ET

Penn St can't score 21 points unless the hit the bottle during halftime, then pick a fight with some fans.

Hey KardiacKid - you're such a fan that you have two college teams? So when one of them looks like crap you don't look like a butthead a cheer for the "other" team?

August 31, 2007  10:18 AM ET

KardiacKid - I mean Ohio St has the hardest schedule of them all.

Just look at the BIG games they start out with

YOUNGSTOWN ST. AKRON WASHINGTON NORTHWESTERN

MINNESOTA

They could run the table in the month of SEPTEMBER!

August 31, 2007  10:34 AM ET

As an OSU fan i have to agree its gonna be a rough september here in the cbus, I hope we have the horses to atleast go .500

August 31, 2007  11:18 AM ET

GO IRISH!!!! I"M A FAN ONCE AGAIN!!!! Defense will be really good under Corwyn Brown...the DB's looked really confident in the Spring Game...

August 31, 2007  11:22 AM ET

Sounds like the media is smart to me. It's pure genius to go and hit up the kid's h.s. coach, knowing that the kid likely called him up to share the good news. Plus, I've seen more than one person put their money on Jones because he was getting more snaps with the First Team than the rest.

What's the buyout clause for Weis? I think he'll be ready to leave after another 2-3 seasons. He only needs the right pro situation to pop up.

August 31, 2007  12:39 PM ET

Who cares who starts? When GT is leading 28-0 in the third quarter, ND will have its third QB in the game.

August 31, 2007  12:40 PM ET

keep on dreaming boys....ND sucks and weis is as overrated as they come....he hasnt won anything in college...he hasnt proven anything except that he eats too much...USC will dominate ND again and you simps will the blame the new QB the same way you blamed brady quinn for not sacking the QB....get off of charlies bandwagon...or at least require him to have a band first...trojans, trojans

August 31, 2007  12:44 PM ET

Please, God. Please make this unimportant story go away. Please.

August 31, 2007  01:27 PM ET

Rosewood, this is Notre Dame, unimportant stories are always important. I mean everyone just loves the Irish. They will start out slow when they play the real teams then run the table when they play the scrub teams in November. Then they'll get into a bowl game they have no business being in and get crushed. Happens every year!

August 31, 2007  01:32 PM ET

Thank God, now I can sleep at night....the thought of who could possibly start at QB for the Irisih was just eating me up at night.

Penn State's D will crush whoever lines up under center.

This message is for Antonio...I am getting so sick of people being typical Notre Dame haters. You root for a team that cheats, like most other Notre Dame haters out there. Notre Dame does it right whether people want to believe it or not. We play a schedule that is one of the hardest every single year. By the way, for all of you big ten (OSU in particular) fans that are complaining that you do not get enough tv time for your games, maybe you would if you didn't play Youngstown State, Akron, Bowling Green, Marshall, Ohio University, Miami(OH), Cincinnati. Our cupcakes are Army, Navy, and Air Force which would smoke the cupcakes that you play. We have a team GPA of over 3.0 every year. We kick kids off of the team if they do something wrong..ex. Rashan Powers Neal gets a DUI and we boot him from the school. Let me remind you that he was a huge part of our game in 2005 and he was predicted to get drafted as the number 1 or 2 fullback. We don't have kids that come to school and receive money..ex. Reggie Bush at USC...Troy Smith at Ohio State...Maurice Clarett admitted he was given things and that teachers would give him passing grades so he could play, kid never went to class. And you need to back off of Charlie Weis too. The guy has come in and led us to two BCS games back to back years. And to sit there as classless as you are and make fun of him for being overweight, you can go to hell. Charlie Weis has more class than any other coach out there. What other team sings their alma mater with the student section after the games? That was Charlie's idea because he wants to remind the players that it isnt just about football, but your school community. What other coach requires that his players get their degree before leaving early because he cares a lot about their education as well as their pro career? Charlie Weis is what class stands for and if you are telling me that he isn't, then your either jealous or literally blind. And I will close with this...You Notre Dame haters out there answer me this question...when was the last time an athlete graduated with two majors...I believe it was political science and finance...was the frontrunner for the Heisman trophy... had over a 3.0 GPA...and had more media attention and scrutiny than any other college athlete in the US? If you can't guess by now, I'm talking about Brady Quinn. That is doing it right and for you low class people out there who just can't stand ND because they do it right...just please shut up and root for your team. You do not have to make fun of a school because they do not win a national championship every year or because their coach is overweight. How freakin childish...

August 31, 2007  04:28 PM ET

Wow, Antonio knows how to get under someone's skin...

August 31, 2007  06:56 PM ET

Yeah I just read the first couple sentences of it. Like the queer actually thinks someone will read all of it. I ended with the part where he says Notre Dame plays one of the hardest schedules every year. I guess those Army, Air Force, Michigan State, Navy, and Stanford **** just really know how to lay it on.
