Danny Szetela is heading to Spain. After nearly two months of transfer speculation and negotiations, the Columbus Crew midfielder has passed up offers from Roma and Newcastle (among others) to play for Spanish First Division side Racing de Santander. The Herald News has learned that Szetela has signed a three-year deal with the Northern Spain-based club, which began the La Liga season in solid fashion by tying Barcelona last weekend. Racing de Santander finished in 10th place in La Liga last season.

That is great news for the US!! There is lots to be learned in Spain for sure that he can bring back to MLS and the national team!

Even better than Roma!! Well, for the style of play in La Liga anyway.

Good for Danny! He is better off landing in a La Liga than a Serie B Italian team.

What a shock! I found out about this move on the Spanish press. I hope he gets playing time. I personally think Racing is a candidate for relegation despite holding Barca to a draw. Overall, CONGRATS to Szetela.

On the Spanish sports news, he was described more as Polish than American.

Great move for him glad to hear he is going to play in warm weather and get the great Euro experience I wish him well and here to 2010 mate

I think this is a spectacular move by Danny, however I think he should have accepted the offer from Newcastle, because he would still get playing time, and he would "toughen up better", considering the EPL is a lot more physical than La Liga.

I am SOOOO happy he isn't playing in England. Spain is leaps and bounds a more skillful league than the Prem, which is borderline Rugby on some days.

I wish more of our young players who get bought up would go to Italy or Spain instead to learn how to play REAL football; not dump & chase Brit-ball garbage.

Big Chaco: it's probably because they wanted to stress that he wouldn't cost them a foreign player spot and because let's face it, Americans haven't been thought of highly at Spanish clubs as of yet. They believe they are all thuggish Brit-ballers.

If he can pick up the skills and knowledge offered by playing in La Liga, then this could be a wonderful thing for our USMNT come 2010.
