07:11 AM ET 07.01 | The Lakers called the agent for Derek Fisher right after free agency began and expressed interest in having the 14-year-veteran return for another run at a championship. Fisher is the main free-agent concern for a team that is well over the salary cap but definitely wants him back without going too far beyond a $2.5-million deal for next season. Fisher, 35, wants to make closer to the $5 million he earned this past season.

I love what Fisher has brought to LA, especially in the playoffs where his true value is evident, but the fact is that he isn't getting any younger and I'm not sure he gets 5 million ANYWHERE, let alone LA. Who can you see giving him that kind of money?

Discount!

Lol, Hey! That guy has five rings!!

If $2.5 million is not enough to cover his dailies, he should call Tiger and ask for Elin's number. I hear she might be getting a little extra spending money pretty soon...

I think he should the 2.5 mil for his daughters sake and a chance to keep winning. Given his age he's lucky to be in that situation. With the changing financial landscape of the NBA a lot of good players can be had for the veteran's minimum... take the offer before its too late Fish!....

Take the cut Fish and stick around for the 3 peat.....

And they shall get their wish. Fisher is beyond the ego thing and he prefers to finish his career with the Lakers so he will probably sign his last contract and retire in two. He will take the pay cut and stay.

I hope he stays, he's a classy guy.

Couldn't agree more. He brings a lot of leadership, and is super humble.

They should just put some incentives on the back end of each year and give him a two year deal @ 2.5m per, that would end up paying him 5 base over two and if they say, make it to the finals and he plays in at least 85% of the games he gets a 1.5m bonus at the end of each season. That way if he gets hurt or just can't play, especially in the second year, they pay him only the 2.5m for that year and he retires with honor.

July 1, 2010  08:46 AM ET

I know you don't usually see that in the NBA since they all like guaranteed money up front, but it's done in the NFL and I think they should start using guaranteed base + performance based incentives in all of pro sports

July 1, 2010  08:47 AM ET

That might help some of these teams better control spending, but who knows, it could also be the worse idea ever!

Him and Ray Allen are known as two of the nicest guys in the league. How is he not a class act?

Professional sports is the only occupation anywhere that cuts your pay following outstanding performance.

a physically demanding occupation will do that when they believe that you are no longer able to perform at the same level.

a contract position where you have completed your assignment will cut your pay to zero following outstanding performance.

but i do see your point... it's not like fisher's physical skills should diminish much between last year and next season...

some people theorize that fisher used his daughter's illness to get out of his contract with utah, that hospitals in l.a. are no more qualified than salt lake city hospitals to deal with the issue, and that the only hospital able to perform whatever procedures needed is sloan-kettering (which is in nyc, not l.a.).

not my words, just what i've read.
