Carr feared App. State, job secure

Michigan coach Lloyd Carr told people privately that he was seriously worried about his team's opening game, against two-time defending I-AA champion Appalachian State. He knew there were legitimate questions about his defense, that Appalachian State had fast players running the spread offense, and that he wouldn't be able to fully evaluate his personnel until after the first game. Michigan athletic director Bill Martin could not fire Carr if he wanted to, and there is no indication he wants to. People continually underestimate Carr's political savvy and the respect he garners within the university.

Carr should have been fired 5 minutes after the game. He admitted the team wasn't ready...who's fault is that? He can't beat OSU...who's fault is that...he can't win bowl games, who's fault is that. I'm huge Michigan fan and always will be but I will not watch another Michigan game until this piece of crap is fired. He has brought the ultimate shame on this program that will take years to recover from if ever. Even if we run the board from here, managing to beat OSU (Which I doubt Carr can manage) and winning out bowl game, this team will forever be remembered as being the team that was beat by a Division I-AA school. Shameful and I blame Carr for all of it. He is not a good coach, never has been and never will be. So he made sure his coaching staff will be taken care of in the event he isn't there, how nice...now do us all a favor and LEAVE!!!

Well I think it's possible that for whatever reason, Carr is their man. But if he had an ounce of integrity, he should resign. To become known for failure is one thing. But to show up totally unprepared is another. He should go away and become one of the hosts of ESPN Game Night.

September 4, 2007  08:50 AM ET

The guys on ESPN Game Night are insightful, I don't even think Carr is capable of even that.

September 4, 2007  09:25 AM ET

As a Michigan fan....I am very disappointed by this showing. I have also been a supporter of Lloyd Carr dating back to the 2005 debacle. However, it is time for a change. There is an ever growing culture of underachievement in Ann Arbor...I think this should be Lloyd's swan song for better or worse. Once the season is over, he will be given the opportunity to resign, he will not be fired barring a complete and total meltdown. He has one of his staunchest supporters in AD Bill Martin, and is very well entrenched as a community fixture.

To be fair, Lloyd is a quality person. You do not worry about him saying stupid things to the media (Jim Harbaugh), or going on a drunken binge (Gary Moeller), or whinin' and cryin' like Bob Stoops. He is also a tremendous suporter of UM athletics, large advocate for charitable causes, and he and his wife established a cancer research fund. However, is it time for a change? Yes.

September 4, 2007  09:26 AM ET

It is not time to change the regime. It is time to start the clock. Lloyd should (and will) retire with the grace and honor deserving of a past national champion when the season ends.

September 4, 2007  09:43 AM ET

Everyone is saying Michigan lost to App. State. Has anyone thought that just maybe App. State beat Michigan? Those kids believed they could win from the kick off. They have speed on offense and defense and they are use to winning. I don't believe they could beat Michigan again but I do believe they're just as athletic as Michigan and in some positions more athletic than Michigan. App. State just outplayed Michigan and they made play after play, period.

SoFlaBoy...yes sweetie...and pigs fly outta your ****

September 4, 2007  09:50 AM ET

Just sit there and look cute!

September 4, 2007  09:57 AM ET

NOPE.

Michigan lost it

September 4, 2007  09:59 AM ET

To fire Lloyd off of this game would be unfair. Yes, he has had some dissapointing showings in some big games of late, but Carr deserves to go out on his own terms.

Plus, if the reports are true he is going to retire at the end of the year anyway.

September 4, 2007  09:59 AM ET

It is definitely time for change. He's lost 5 out of the last 6 bowl games and the last 3 (maybe more, can't recollect right now) games against OSU. When you stop being able to deliver bowl games and worse yet, can't beat your biggest rival, it is time to find someone who can. Great career record, won a National and is great for the community and such...great, have to respect him for that, but he can no longer take the great talent he has and prepare them for the games that really count to UM fans and the national poll rankers. So I agree THE TRUTH, it is time for change. Sooner and not later.

September 4, 2007  09:59 AM ET

Waaa.. we lost a Football game... seriously guys, its just a bunch of kids playing a game - its not like its the NFL or anything

September 4, 2007  10:08 AM ET

GEO, did you go to college? I can't imagine you did, because you'd never say that otherwise.

September 4, 2007  10:08 AM ET

Oh please, to say this was just a football game shows you have no idea what happened last weekend. You can't be a UM fan or a fan of big ten football period to say that. As far as NCAA goes this was David taking out Galieth. Michigan is done for the year. Even if they win out pollsters are going to remember this game. If they lose one more game this year I seriously doubt that a BCS game is in their future. That may be out of their reach already.

September 4, 2007  10:10 AM ET

Truth,

Call it what you want, App. State outplayed MU all day. It's amazing see the Michigan fan sitting in the stands with a what's just happened look on their faces. Hey maybe pigs were flying outta of their A.$.$.
