08:21 AM ET 07.05 | The Yankees, Dodgers and Cardinals were among the clubs with a scout in attendance at Cliff Lee's start in Detroit on Sunday afternoon. It marked the second straight start by Lee that the Yankees scouted. Rival clubs believe the Yankees are pursuing Lee ahead of the July 31 non-waiver trade deadline, although it's possible the Yankees are scouting Lee in preparation for his upcoming free agency.

They're scouting for Free Agency, not trade. Cliff Lee would command a vast return in prospects/players in return for his services in a trade. But as of November, Cliff Lee would come with no strings attached to any team. One thing the Yankees will never have a shortage of is money. They'll wait until the offseason to cut some people loose and then throw some of that freed up dough at Lee. They don't need him this season, but come next year when they might be without the services of one Andy Pettite, they'll have a ready rotational spot for the man.

i pray another team aside from the yanks snatch that guy up. i do not want to see him in a yankee uniform...plus he torches the yanks at yank stadium everytime he plays em.

The Mariners will not get back in return what they gave for him. He is going FA, he has made that very clear for a long time.
Dumb move by them to begin with. It never made any sense.

The only way that move makes sense is if they legitimately thought they would be a contender this year. That bespeaks a level delusion that can't be measured with existing technology.

July 5, 2010  12:00 PM ET

because honestly i don't see any other team willing to overpay him, mean they have to offer way more than the yankees!!!

July 5, 2010  12:02 PM ET

i only the red sox competing against the yankees for cliff lee, whoever offers more that will be the winner!

I don't believe the Cards have the prospects to get this done, but with an expiring contract and a team built for now......it may make sense to pursue it.

Add this and mark it down...Cliff Lee back to the Phillies...Book it.

mods aren't working today ... tsk, tsk ...

At the airport, Cliff Lee asks to have his luggage sent to NYC - Tampa - Philadelphia - Cincinnati or Arlington Texas. Whichever one forks over more money than the others.

Not likely, considering it would only be a two or three month rental.

Agreed. Also, why give up all your good prospects when you can wait until the off season.

...which is bad for baseball because it will drive the salary up of every pitcher in the league.

The Yankees act like a bunch of spoiled kids with a severe case of entitlement.
