Richt's job less secure with Evans out

08:31 AM ET 07.05 | When the police report detailing the specifics of the DUI arrest of Georgia Athletics Director Damon Evans went public, many Dawg fans figured Evans couldn't resign quickly enough. I doubt Mark Richt was among them. Richt has a stake in this -- a big stake. He's Georgia's football coach. He is approaching his 10th season. And the criticism of him has never been greater. Evans was in Richt's corner. He was viewed as an important buffer between Richt and Georgia's higher-ups, including UGA President Michael Adams. A month ago, Evans spoke of how ridiculous it is for anyone to suggest that Richt's seat is even lukewarm. With Evans on his way out, the game changes. Richt may have won 90 games in his nine seasons in Athens, but this is all about current events. The 8-5 season in '09 did not sit well with the masses. And losses by 26 points to Tennessee and 24 points to Florida did not go unnoticed.

How do you quote a Tennessee newspaper about Richt being on the hot seat, when the said paper has an agenda. This sort of talk influences recruiting. Talk about an idiotic rumor posted by SI.

QUOTE(#3):

Note to Dawg fans:Richt is a great guy, and hands down y'all's best option at coach. He gives you by far your best shot at an SEC championship within the next few years. 2009 was a fluke, and he'll easily win 10 or 11 games in 2010. .................. Keep y'all's freakin mitts off of Muschamp!!!!!

Actually you are dead right. I completely agree. I know Muschamp is from there and played there but I don't think he would leave the position he is in.

Too many times a new AD has his own agenda. Richt is a good coach and the boosters should have his back. Just never know, when there is a change like this.

You quote a Tennesse paper about Richt being on the hot seat. Par for the course for SI. The seat is not even warm. Evans was an Adams puppet (thats why Adams hired him as well as that Evans would be the first African American AD in the Southeastern Conference. Adams likes headlines). CMR is probably happy that Evans is gone because they have not always seen eye to eye. Adams needs to forego headlines and making political statements and hire McGarrity to be the next AD or Adams not Richt may be next to go. Adams' TWO high profile hires since he has been President have been Jim Harrick and Damon Evans. (Mark Fox was hired by Evans) Neither have worked out to well to say the least. One more strike on the AD position and he is gone. For all of your readers be assured that Coach Richt is secure and going nowhere.

The problem at UGA is that 10 wins is still fewer than 12 wins, which is what Florida's had the past few years. And that's the benchmark in the SEC East.

July 5, 2010  09:59 AM ET

10 wins is good. Makes Florida look good for having beaten on a 10-2 team during the regular season....

but he only averages 10 wins a year. that's not good enough.

Sadly you are right. There are about 8 teams in the SEC who think they should/could win the conference every year. The bar has definitely been raised.

Tough business. He will land on his feet somewhere and they will be glad to land him.

No one is more destructive towards the team they avow to support than Dawgs fans. To actually read a post from an self-described "Jawga Boy" that is calmly supportive of Coach Richt is encouraging.

"And losses by 26 points to Tennessee..."

I just wanted to read it again... heh heh

know what influences recruiting? - winning

July 5, 2010  11:01 AM ET

Yawn. This 'rumor' is pant-on-head re tarded. Richt's seat isn't any warmer than what his butt makes it. Why? Because when you average 10 wins a season, it's just a matter of time before the breaks go your way and you get 12 wins.

If they backslide again/more for a couple of seasons, THEN the fire will be lit under his chair.

July 5, 2010  11:09 AM ET

Bottom Line: If UGA fires Richt, they will get what they deserve...which WON'T be 10 wins a year.

Richt is a great coach and a good man, and he will never embarrass your program.

Agreed. After this incident a man like richt is exactly who you want to be the face of the program.

Texas feels comfortable, but a lot of fans will (and should) get uneasy every time a high profile coaching positions opens up. I'm not sure if we would need to (but I'm sure we can), but if Mark Richt is let go, Texas could add another 300k-500k to go along with his 900k salary to keep him in Austin. But I don't think it's needed because Texas is a crown jewel in football now, even if our last championship was in 2006.

July 5, 2010  11:33 AM ET

The football landscape is full of programs that fired or forced out their coach and ended up worse for it. For every Urban Meyer/Florida upgrade success you have more failures like:
Carr to Rodriquez (Michigan), Nutt to Petrino (Arkansas), Mason to Brewster (Minnesota), Holtz to Davie (Notre Dame), Tuberville to Chitzik (Auburn) and soon to be Leach to Tuberville (Texas Tech). Unless the Dawgs have their eye on a top tier coach to step in, they should keep Richt because they could do a heck of a lot worse!

A coach who wins more than he loses against some of the best competition in the Country and runs a clean program? Wasn't that the job description when he started? Guess he should have read the fine print.
