Notre Dame to start freshman QB

In three days, Jimmy Clausen has jumped from No. 3 to No. 1 on the depth chart, with coach Charlie Weis handing the heavy reins of the Irish quarterback spot to the towheaded freshman from the West Coast. Clausen's first starting job for Notre Dame takes place in the anticipated matchup at No. 14 Penn State on Saturday. Clausen was the top quarterback at Notre Dame after spring practices, but he was held back when practice began Aug. 6. He was recovering from surgery to remove a bone spur from his throwing elbow, and Weis did not think he was ready to start last week.

Good luck buddy. You should have stayed in California.......

It won't matter ND is going to have a horribly long season! And if it was a different coach he would have been fired at the end of this year. Charlie could win with Ty's kids but what is Charlie now doing? They will struggle to get 5 wins this year!!!!

September 5, 2007  08:16 AM ET

Definitely a re-building season for the Irish.

September 5, 2007  08:50 AM ET

He better eat his Wheaties because that offensive line is a sieve. The PSU backers and safeties will be getting free runs at him all game long.

September 5, 2007  08:53 AM ET

Desperation. Already. How have the mighty fallen!

September 5, 2007  09:03 AM ET

Penn State is going to mess this kid up. He might get hit so hard he is going to get up off the ground singing Rocky Top.

September 5, 2007  09:13 AM ET

Yeah thats rough I think, the Penn St. game is a "white out" game too, isnt it? Welcome to college pickle!

September 5, 2007  09:29 AM ET

This decision makes the most sense. This could be a lost season for ND, but next year looks good. They are bringing in the no 1 recruiting class according to most experts, and the schedule looks very favorable. I say let Clausen take his lumps this year, like Brady Quinn did, and see what happens. Let him work with Ron Powlus on everything regarding being the ND QB. I just wonder if the other QB's knew this was coming. I'd have to believe Jones would have wanted to transfer. But if Clausen gets things going this year, the Irish should have no problem going 10-2 or even 11-1 next year.

bud8brian man please shut up...ND is done....theyll be lucky if penn state doesnt kill clausen..you guys still dont get it...its not just about the number of big name recruits that you land...the real recruiting comes when you actually have to go and evaluate a kid who may or may not even get a full scholarship...where is the Aaron taylor of this team...it has no anchor...fat charlie is acting as if richard seymore is going to get him the ball on their 20 again...im telling you guys that charlie has OD'd on cheeseburgers...no one can play QB behind that line...they suck on both sides of the ball...and their coach is one-dimensional

Gee..you mean all of that Cloak-n-Dagger mixed signals BS from Slightly Less Fat Tuna was a smoke screen? Color me Shocked boys and girls.

September 5, 2007  10:09 AM ET

Two things I am looking forward to this Saturday.

1. UM beating the snot outta Oregon (keeping my fingers crossed on this one).

2. PSU D sacking the snot outta Pickle Boy. I hope Clausen started taking roids like Quinn to get some added strength because he'll need it when PSU LB's light him up.

September 5, 2007  10:20 AM ET

Saying he can't win with his own recruits after one game against a damn good team is just plain stupid. Ty did such a **** job recruiting that there's only about 10 upperclassman that played against GT and most of them had never seen meaningful minutes before (Vernaglia, Brown, Kuntz, and Bruton for example). Charlie's first full class are only sophmores, they have no experience. This team is very inexperienced and yes it will be a long season, so get your blowout wins and jokes in about them now, because soon you won't be able to anymore.

September 5, 2007  10:57 AM ET

THEY NEED AN OFFENSIVE LINE. Maybe Charlie Weiss could try out...I hear he still has some eligibility left....As I said before, they could put Tom Brady under center, Brady Quinn, Peter Brady, Marsha, Marsha, Marsha Brady heck the whole Brady Bunch and it wont help until they shore up the O-LINE.....

September 5, 2007  11:14 AM ET

I am a HUGE Patriots fan and was a Charlie Weiss fan too. But I have stayed less & less of a fan of Weiss since he took over at Notre Dame. His arrogance on the system vs. talent is crazy. The NFL has amazing talent and the Pats had amazing talents & system type guys. The reality that talent runs supreme in college football. If you don't have the guys you don't win anything. Its NOT a thinking mans game like the NFL. If you don't have stud position players and a strong D in college thats it. The Pats had a few studs and a few system guys that made it in the NFL.

Lets question Weiss's recruiting and who he has singed. Would it be fair to say that Weiss won with Willingham's guys????

September 5, 2007  11:53 AM ET

of course it would be safe to say that weis won with ty's recruits...its also safe to say that he's gotten blown out with his recruits..so go on you girls...keep blaming ty the way georgr bush still blames clinton...you sound like a fool...when fat charlie wins its because he's such a mastermind..but when fat charlie loses then its because their willinghams recruits...what does that sound like?..come on man its easier for you to be completely ridiculolus rather than admit the obvious

September 5, 2007  11:55 AM ET

anytime you change starting QB's 3 times within the first week of the season..during and after a blowout loss...your done..

September 5, 2007  12:04 PM ET

I like the whole fact that the basis for your arguments about Weis' recruits are purely coming from the very first game in which most have now only played one game. They are surely going to get their lumps this year but we'll see in the long run. And another thing, if Notre Dame sucks so bad why are they the second most winningest team in all of college football. Look at your teams records in the past and compare, I dare you
