If Lloyd Carr retires, (Lafayette, LA) Daily Advertiser writer Glenn Guilbeau says Louisiana State coach Les Miles should look at Michigan. The New Orleans Times-Picayune reported that there were no direct questions made to Miles about his possible interest, though Miles did appear uncomfortable at times when talking about Appalachian State's upset of the Wolverines.

Who would want to coach Michigan?

September 5, 2007  10:24 AM ET

ME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

September 5, 2007  10:24 AM ET

I am a life-long Maryland Terrapins fan. If the head-coaching job were to open up at Michigan, the line of coaches applying for the job would wrap around the block....no doubt about it.

September 5, 2007  10:25 AM ET

Les is the FIRST call that should be made Sans Lloyd......Call him up..feel him out....

September 5, 2007  10:45 AM ET

No! Leave our coaches alone, you ****! Haha, it seems like LSU can't catch a break... maybe everyone just loves our sloppy seconds. Yo Bama!

September 5, 2007  10:53 AM ET

I am sure he feels uncomfortable because he is in the middle of the season and LSU fans know he already said the only place he would leave LSU for is Michigan. I think he is going to be a lock for the job because LSU will at least have another 10 win season. I think the bigger issue is not who will fill the Michigan job, but who will fill the LSU job after Miles leaves. I personally think the Tigers should be planning on calling Spurrier if Miles does indeed leave for Michigan. I really feel Spurrier would like to move to the Western division of the SEC and have the type of players LSU can recruit.

As a Michigan alum, I am just blown away by this weekend's events. I never supported the Fire Lloyd campaings that have been going on for at least 3 years now- UNTIL NOW.

It's not that I hate the guy or he's hurting the team, but he's not helping anymore. Anyone who thinks coaches wouldn't want to coach one of the MOST STORIED teams in fooball (USC is the only other one I can think of on the same level) then you must be on something.

You'll be surprised how many coaches jump out of the woodwork at this once in a lifetime chance.

September 5, 2007  11:21 AM ET

wow- why would Les Miles leave the #2 team in the country to go to a train wreck like UM?

September 5, 2007  11:33 AM ET

Les played and coached at Michigan thats why he would consider leaving LSU if he was given the opportunity to be the head coach at Michigan

September 5, 2007  12:21 PM ET

michigan wont hire outside its own system...look at the past most of michigans coaches were assitants at michigan at one point in their careers

September 5, 2007  12:23 PM ET

Miles has a Michigan clause in his contract with LSU. Leaving LSU for Michigan would cost him major bucks - so much that he probably won't unless Michigan pays for the "penalty". Miles is probably the best head coach ever at LSU, and I would like him to stay, however we have Pelinni on the staff and perhaps Spurrier on speed dial. LSU will be fine. The only thing that gets my blood up about the deal is Mich would be ranked in the top 5 again - just because of Miles - and LSU recieved NO credit for having a head coach while he has been here. Chance of a lifetime? Pull your head out and look around boy - there ARE other schools!

September 5, 2007  12:23 PM ET

Sad to say no matter if he stays or goes we will still have the talent and the team. We are doing fine with out Saban. We lose Miles= We go get Spurrier or Meyer

September 5, 2007  12:42 PM ET

Go get Spurrier or Meyer? Maybe Spurrier... maybe, but I doubt it. There's no doubt there'd be a long list of quality coaches that would love the LSU job, but I think a few of you LSU fans need to tap the brakes just a little bit.

Also, you have to ask yourself if you really are doing just fine even though you haven't won the SEC in two years under Miles despite having more talent than any other program in the conference (yes, that includes Florida). Miles inherited a stacked team, and has done a good job of keeping it stacked, but truth be told, he doesn't have a lot to show for it yet.

I'd also be careful of calling him the best coach ever at LSU, seeing as there is a coach in your recent past that took the program for mediocrity to national champion.

September 5, 2007  01:06 PM ET

Saban left LSU on a 9-4 season - Miles took the almost the same team and went 11-2 in the middle of a disaster-Katrina. Result: Miles > Saban. Recruiting? I wish for better "rankings" too but look at the lesser-ranked players at LSU outperforming the higher-ranked players elsewhere and maybe you'll see that Miles has done fine - rankings are opinions just like Michigan was #5. Its performance that matters - and there is nothing wrong with Miles's performance. BTW - why isn't Mich. interested in Saban?
You think Saban will go 22-4 in his next 2 - Ill give you this one to turn-around the team. Ala still wont go 22-4.

September 5, 2007  01:09 PM ET

Coach Miles has a reported 5 million dollar buyout clause if he leaves LSU for Michigan. I'm sure if Carr was fired at this minute (1:05 P.M.), the money could be raised (by alumni, students, fans) by the end of the business day today.

September 5, 2007  01:29 PM ET

Who's knows, maybe Michigan will make a play at Saban, everyone knows how much he likes to stay at one place for a long time.

September 5, 2007  01:34 PM ET

I think we all know that contracts are barely worth the paper they are printed on anymore. Everything would be renegotiated and re-worked and, further, whatever money it took to hire ANY coach would be gathered up in about an hour.

Les Miles was one of the names being thrown around years ago during the initial 'Fire Lloyd Carr' days back when Miles was at Ok. State. Whether or not it happens, he would be the perfect "outside" hire for a school that almost always hires from within because of his playing days at Michigan under Bo, his age (younger than most previous coaches), and his current level of prestige.

September 5, 2007  01:55 PM ET

The difference between Saban's 9-4 year to Miles first year at 11-2 lies almost solely with the inexperience at QB. JaMarcus Russel was an inexperienced freshman and split time with a very pedestrian Marcus Randall. Niether QB was good, sometimes they were flat-out bad and cost LSU games. The noticeable leap in QB play from Russel is what really turned that team around. And honestly, I think something like Katrina becomes more of a rallying point than a detraction. Motivation can be huge, and, as terrible as it may sound, events like Katrina can be great motivators.

And I wasn't knocking the recruiting. Miles has done a great job of keeping the talent pool rich in LSU. And really, I'm not saying Miles is bad. I think he's a very good coach. Just be careful about putting him too high up on the pedastal when he hasn't actually accomplished what other coaches have.

September 5, 2007  02:23 PM ET

I think Les Miles will leave LSU for Michigan, solely because LSU will get rolled by USC in the national championship game. He'll cry about how the SEC is too tough and that's why USC beat them by 75 points, then he'll go to Michigan. He's a Michigan man and would jump at the chance to coach there.

Retires??? Carr should be axed immediately. There's no chance of him coming back next year and this season is gonzo, so give somebody good a head start now...
