06:35 AM ET 07.09 | Even though ascending receiver Steve Smith is anxious to cash in and does not want to play out the final year of his original rookie contract, he promises to be an on-time arrival Aug. 1 when Giants training camp opens up in Albany. Smith is adamant but not militant in his desire to secure a new deal. He's scheduled to make $550,000 this season, which doesn't cut it for a player who shattered the franchise's single-season record for receptions with 107.

Ho hum...another day, another guy who doesn't like his contract.

Everyday we get a story like this. <Insert name> wants a new deal. Even if the timing (last year of his rookie deal) and numbers (107 catches) seem to justify it in this case, I wish the FN staffers would give the I-wanna-a-new-deal crowd a rest.

They're wearing me out. Just write a story that says, "Every professional, and some amateur, athletes want more money than they're making now.

May we move on, please.

To many lawyer, not enough football.

Ah, yes... another professional athlete trying to feed his family.

That would actually explain a lot...

At $550K a year I don't think his family is loosing any weight. Unless Jamarcus Russell is his brother, and Vick is his financial advisor.

I guess the local fishwrap in each of our football towns are really struggling to find items to titilate us with two weeks before the start of training camp.

Two weeks...

Maybe we start a new team with everyone who wants a new deal. They can be in New Deal, Texas. Jerry Jones can build them a new stadium.

The amount of greed is appalling. The amount of greed during the worst economic situation in 80 years is so far beyond appalling that there aren't words for it.

Why don't we redo every contract? Better idea everyone gets a one year contract based on your previous year. Only one year contracts, every year. You say but what about their future? What about mine, I have a job that lets live. The players and either do well or find a 9-5 job.

Good comment. Ticket prices, parking prices, concessions all increase and lots of Americans do not have jobs.

Two weeks... and Part 1 is in San Antonio... and I will be in Austin.

Guess I have no choice but to make a trip down to the Alamo city.

On point! you couldn't have said it better.

Maybe there is still time for him to switch sports and get a better contract with the Miami Heat. They're probably going to look for some scrubs for the bench, though they might actually pay less than what the Giants are paying.

Every one is trying to cash in during a rccession... Brother can you spare a dime??

I agree whole-heartedly. One year contracts for every athlete! Then they can renegotiate every year after they have one good season! Or they can get screwed when they have a bad season. Funny how athletes don't ask for their contracts to be renegotiated when they have a crappy season huh?

There would be no stablility in the league with contract negotiations every year..........
