I hope they plan on paying most of those salaries, after they ditch them or Good Freaking Luck finding someone stupid enough to take them!

They found a taker for Bradley, so you never know. I can't imagine they'll get rid of Soriano though, without paying 80% of his contract.

I could be wrong but I'm pretty sure Silva has a very similar, within one or two million, of Bradley. That was more of a salary swap. Silva was terrible and a waste of a roster space on the Mariners, Bradley was a distraction in Chicago and nobody in the organization liked his attitude. Mariners figured Bradley might do better in a small market where nobody cares about baseball when a guy named Griffey isn't playing and the Cubs would have taken any player for Bradley.
The saddest part of all of this is I don't see them keeping Lee at the end of the year. He's been slumping all year and is obviously starting the decline of his career and is still living off his reputation as one of the best defensive first basemen in the game(which he hasn't been for a good two or three years now), but for a year or two there with the Cubs you could make the argument that he was the best player in the National League.
(I know a Cardinals fan is going to take offense to that, but Lee was a beast in 2005 and 2009 and I think he got robbed for the MVP in 2005 all things considered)

Not that I particularly want them to keep Lee in his current state if someone better is available. He's still just my favorite Cub and seemed to be the one most immune to prolonged slumps until this year(when not injured. He went through quite the injury stretch it 2006-2008) who is never in the news for being a crybaby like their other big name players.

Hey Ten...yeah, I'm happy that they're finally gonna get the demo started. They'll probably have to eat some contracts, but so what? They're already paying all that money for nothing anyway.

I like how it is July and the Cubs have realized it isn't worth trying anymore this year. I like the idea of reducing costs though.

I told my friends when Rickett's bought the team officially, this is the last year to win, and no way will he keep those Tribune inflated salaries around.
Good luck on dumping most of them though, not even the yankees would be willing to take on as much as the Cubs overpaid for 3/4 of their roster.

best news I've heard all year.. Time to get some youngins and look towards some free agents next year.. Get rid of Lee (hate to say it), Zambrano (needs to happen), Soriano (he needs to be in a winning situation) and we'll be good.. only problem is tht salary.. what team would want to take them? gunna be interesting

They have to find a way to make Z WANT to leave. And, I've been saying they should have gotten rid of Dempster four years ago. He was an unthreatening closer and one good year a couple of years ago doesn't justify what they pay him. Bobby Howry? Again?!?!?
If the Ricketts family is really serious, when Lou says goodbye in the off-season they'll also get rid if Jim Hendry and Larry Rothschild.
Hendry can't put together a winning team.
Rothschild has taken some of the best pitchers in baseball (Wood, Pryor, Zambrano) and, at the very least, was not able to motivate them. He could be blamed for physically ruining Wood and Pryor.

I think the cubs should do more than dismantle the roster. How about dismantling the entire organization and just dissappearing from the face of the earth!

How is Rothschild to blame fore Pryor and Wood? Last I checked that was a MANAGERS choice on how much they pitch. The MANAGER was DUSTY BAKER not Rothschild.

Rothschild may not be the only one to blame, but he has contributed more than his fair share. Dusty and Lou have both done a great job ruining potentially very good teams. Zambrano is not a total loss, we could still get the Yanks or Sox to bite (maybe even the Rays!!) Lee, right now, will net the most return, and Soriano is not going away quietly. We have a lot of young guys that will go far. Justin Berg could turn into a pretty nice starter if they get rid of Lilly and Dempster, but cubs fans should be happy of the upswing from the situation.

The team has no heart. Sad. I want Lou to throw bases and kick dirt. I want the Penguin and Steve Trout and The Hawk back. I want Harry and Steve in the booth and I'd like to see Carlos implode in a Cardinals uni. They got no heart, Rocky.

No chance they can move Soriano. Wrong pic tied to this link. Lee, Ramirez hopefully.
