Pats should be worried about pass rush

07:31 AM ET 07.12 | The Patriots aren't alone in hoping to generate a pass rush. Teams like the Colts, Saints and Dolphins could count the time their passers had with a sundial last year in wins over New England. ... Tully Banta-Cain returns after registering 10 sacks last year, as does fellow veteran Derrick Burgess. Rob Ninkovich and Pierre Woods will also be part of the mix, while it's hard to expect much from Shawn Crable at this juncture. The problem: All of those guys are complementary rushers, and none are the kind of threats that force a team to tilt its protection or keep an extra guy in to chip or double-team.

Don't you wish you had Richard Seymour, Bill? Oh right, you had him then traded him to Oakland instead of paying him. And now you don't have a pass rush. Funny how life bites you in the arse sometimes.

Oh Yeah! Finally!!

It's really too bad.

Just score more points than you give up. How is that running game?

Ouch!

they should worry about running out of videotape or the referees falling out of love with them.

That pretty much says it all.

If Maroney is taking the handoffs, not good...

Still - I am curious, Patriot fans. Little Bill threw a lot of young guys out there last year and I recall it being generally acknowledged that they were in rebuild mode.

What is the sense of the "State of the Defense" for 2011?

Probably an abandoned child. Until the police found his parents and made them come back.

July 12, 2010  08:18 AM ET

They can't generate a pass rush. The Ravens absolutely blew past the o-line to beat up Tom with reckless abandon. That's both lines showing pretty major weaknesses. Both the Jets and the Dolphins seem to be loading up with talent while Patriot vets are left to twist in the wind as to whether or not they are going to get serious offers from their own club. Unless Bill is about to unleash a whole new generation of 'best kept secrets' to fill some holes, I think they are in trouble.

So Matt, I didn't catch whether you were the CEO, or the pro athlete, or the doctor? Oh.. maybe you're the beauty queen.

July 12, 2010  09:37 AM ET

Well...it's their own fault. Time and time again they keep trading down and bypassing opportunities to land a pass rusher in the draft. The days of 'everything turns to gold' decisions is over for the Pats.

Defense in New England? Doesn't anyone remember the fourth and one against the Colts last year.

You make a good point. The Pats have NOT drafted well for a number of years now and it is beginning to show. I think they have learned their lesson about trading down for lesser talent.
That being said, I would not give them up for dead. Only the Jets and Ravens gave up fewer points in the AFC last year, and nobody else was getting to Peyton or Brees either.

lol

Seymour was 3-4 end, not a pass rusher. While he did get a decent number of sacks for someone playing that position, him still being on the team wouldn't solve the lack of an elite pass rusher at all.

Amen. All those teams that did it the "sexy" way still gave up more points for the most part. They have problems, for sure, but to think that the miscreant Jets and the inept 'Fins are the answer is a joke. Remember, QB is still the most important position and I don't remember Dirty Sanchez or Chaz Henne making the Pro Bowl.

That's the funniest thing I have ever heard, considering you are a Deadskins fan. Can Danny boy pay me $100 mil. not to come to work?
