07:34 AM ET 07.12 | Tony Allen's departure from the Celtics caught his mother, along with Celtics fans who appreciated his defense, by surprise. "It's very unfortunate, him leaving, because I thought he would stay," said Ella Allen. "I am very surprised, but my son makes his own decisions, and I support him 100 percent. He is definitely going to miss the Celtics -- it's a great team with great people," she said. "I know he is going to miss his friends. He really liked those guys. I'm sure he hates to leave."

Mom's just afraid that people are going to start burning his jersey and egging her house....gotta love her, she thinks he's just as popular as Lebron.

He will be missed

July 12, 2010  08:19 AM ET

Just goes to show that solid bench players are often more interested in the $$ than championships...might be bad news for Miami.

July 12, 2010  08:29 AM ET

who cares what his momma thinks? Maybe the article should be how the C's will miss his hard nosed defense and high motor.

Au contraire... "Good for Tony. Good for the Celtics!" They should have tossed him a while ago.

Didn't Tony Allen already win a ring? He doesn't need to go running to Miami to try and chase one. Honesty, if you're a role player, why go to Miami? If they lose, THEY won't get blamed. It'll be the "scrubs" around them that take the heat (no pun intended).

Where dd Tony Allen sign any way?

LOL

I think Celts did the right thing to let him go. Even though he's athletic and a very good defender he still doesn't have a shot and I think the compelling reason that Celts let him go is the fact that he's one of those players that looses focus and makes silly mistakes when you least expect.

He's still very good for a bench player but not reliable so if the Celts are able to replace him with a more stable reliable veteran then you can see the sense in their judgement of the true value of Toni Allen. Also given the salary cap situation with most teams there will be lots of willing and able veterans they will be more than happy to take the minimum salary to stay in the league while playing for a championship. Add the fact that the Celts window of opportunity is just this one season coming up so there's no need to strangle the salary cap with Toni Allen's contract...

I'm sorry momma. We know your son loves and will miss Boston but he has himself to blame for not developing a reliable shot all these years be's been in the league.

Farewill in Memphis bro!

what if the player in question was delonte west?

So it begins. Losing valuable bench players is the main reason the Celtics had no shot at repeating. TONY Allen should have moved into the starting line-up with RAY Allen coming off the bench.

speaking of 'no shot'... that is what is wrong with your proposed scenario.

I was actually wondering if she went on the record about being surprised in order to quash any rumors. "I'm really surprised my son is leaving the Celtics" = "He's not leaving because I'm banging anybody."
