Will the Yankees now be sold?

07:31 AM ET 07.14 | Reports suggest George Steinbrenner's family will save a fortune based on tax laws, but another question is whether they will have the same "level of passion" for the Yankees. There was no doubt that even in the past few years when Steinbrenner's health was declining and the role of sons Hal and Hank increased, that George was still The Boss, and that things had to meet his approval, or at least have his blessing. What we don't know is what level of passion Hal Steinbrenner has for running the Yankees. ... What we don't know is whether the family would love to sell the team for a couple of billion or so and bow out from the public eye.

I see where this report came from so I will just say ... I seriously doubt it!

One never knows though. Depends on how the will is written and how many heirs there are. This could be at least a 4 way split (I think he has at least 2 daughters) and inner family sqaubles could play a part in this sometime down the road.

Not sure why they would do this. Really doesn't make any sense. If the sons wanted out of the organization, they would have left a long time ago. There is more than enough money in that family that the sons could have started new businesses, or taken over others.

That's very true. If there is an equal split and the daughters aren't interested in their money being tied up by the team, or by extension, being controlled by their brothers, they may force a sale.

Wishful thinking on the part of Red Sox fans.

July 14, 2010  08:44 AM ET

As for the article... RIDICULOUS!!!

The people of Boston WISH the Steinbrenners would sell the team! Here's the thing though... the Yankees' success does not begin, nor end, with the Steinbrenner family. The Yankees have been through five different owners and have World Series to show for each and every one of them, except for their first owners, who knew nothing about baseball.

I know this story is from the Boston Globb and has little credibility at this point, but never is a pretty big word.

Red Sox fans didn't write the story. A buttwipe columnist at the Globb did.

Due to the tax laws this year, there is no inheritance tax. So the Steinbrenner family does not owe hundreds of millions of dollars to the federal government. They owe nothing! So the family still own the Yanks and can continue to be the plague of N.E.!

July 14, 2010  09:00 AM ET

I hope not. George was a one of a kind owner for both good and bad. Hal seems pretty level headed and appears to have gotten into his role as head honcho. I think they would want to ensure their fathers legacy by keeping and continuing a strong orgainization and only promoting the good that he did which to me out weighed his bad.

Plague? Really?

Plus, are the daughters interested in baseball? That may be the deciding factor if the estate is divvied up equally. If the daughters aren't interested, they would need to be either bought out or the team may have to be sold.

Family bickering can destroy a lot. As the McCourt family how that divorce is working out.

What up Rex and M3AT? Long time to talk...............ANYTHING can happen, though it's seems to be a LONGshot unless the family is a bunch of morons...........

Not much going on for me right now. Been pretty busy and passing my time by hanging occassionally with the crazy blond again.

How's things on your end? Families good? Job is good?

I seriously doubt that the boys would sell the team, but you never know when the family dynamic is involved. Like your meat packing/deli analogy, I have also seen some strange things happen when siblings are involved in business together.

Why would they sell a cash printing press like the yankees? if they don't want to be bored w/ running the team. Name a president/CEO and then just sit back and let the dump trucks of $$$ just roll up to the bank. Not every owner is Mark Cuban or The Boss. Can anyone even name the owner of REds? White Sox? Padres? those guys just go to the mailbox, pull out big check, go back to mansion, spend it
