Kobe turns pitch man

07:29 AM ET 07.14 | And, for his next trick, Kobe Bryant will play recruiter. Derek Fisher credited the 12-time All-Star with being a main reason to return to the Lakers, and now Bryant will put aside past differences to meet with free-agent guard Raja Bell on Wednesday in Los Angeles. Bryant once said he had "bigger fish to fry" than Bell after a squabble with the former Phoenix Suns guard, but now Bryant is hoping the Lakers can reel him in with what's left of their midlevel exception: $1.77 million next season. Bell, who will be 34 in September, played only six games with Charlotte and Golden State last season because of a torn ligament in his left wrist, but he is a career 41.1% three-point shooter and still capable of solid on-ball defense.

I know it is more of a long shot, but he needs to recruit Matt Barnes.

Really?
I realize the guy has some still sets the Lakers can use dearly, but he is one wildly inconsistent player.

They need a hard nosed defender and athleticism off the bench. And Barnes seems to be an energy guy. And there are a few bulldog already in LA, so he wouldn't have to be the only one. I like that Raja has been a decent spot up shooter in the past, but I think Barnes would be more valuable.

Kobe has an image problem. Artest wanted a ring so bad that he bowed down to Mamba. Not saying he isn't worthy, but he might consider his personality. You would think that a lot of mid tier players would be blowing Kobe's phone up trying to come out there and play, but that's not the case.

I'll be happy with whatever LA does as long as it translates to fewer minutes for Luke Walton.

Why not both? They need to get rid of some of the dead weight on that bench. Everybody is retooling, so Mitch should look to step up his aggression.

Part of that, too, is money and playing time. Guys know LA isn't handing it out right now, so they're looking elsewhere.

I'm in the HUGE minority that thinks that Sasha Vujacic can be useful, even if he is overpaid. He's a pretty good shooter and he's scrapped, he just seems to be in the doghouse a lot. Luke Walton is completely useless. The only value he has is if he can use his foul wisely. Other than that, I cringe every time I see him on the floor. It hilarious watching literally EVERY team go right at him on offense as soon as he hits the floor.

I wouldn't say Kobe recruited Fisher to stay, it was kinda a given that Fish was going to stay.. Why leave a championship team and the best medical staff for his daughter. Now Kobe is doing a good job trying to get Bell to come off the bench will be a nice upgrade.

I don't think a lot of people like Sasha, I personally can't stand the guy and KNOW he is a terrible shooter. He had one solid playoff run coming off the bench in 08 but ever since then he hasn't been able to get his shot down.

He was a good shooter that whole season. When he gets minutes, he can be reliable, in my opinion. In the playoff run you mentioned, there were times that he looked like the second best Laker on the floor. Granted, there were also times that he looked clueless, but that happens to 22 year olds. He is still young, has good size, can shoot, handle and is a capable, though not great defender. A little seasoning, I think he can be productive.

The guy is a career 39% shooter and 37% from three point....The one "good" season he had he shot only 45% and 43% and that as three years ago...He doesnt rebound and only plays ok defense....I think Barnes or Bell would be a def upgrade over this guy......I dont think he is what they thought he was when they signed him to that contract...BUT the good thing is that it is expiring after this season....Now if they could only get rid of Luke......

But who is consistent on the Lakers bench.. Lamar will sleep until the playoffs and every now and then have a great game.. Adding barnes will not be a bad pick up, will add more to defense

I'm not at all saying that I don't understand why people think he's dead weight. I get it. I really do. I just think that he's young enough to prove to be a productive player. And call me myopic, but it's the 37% from distance (especially the 43.7% in 07-08) that makes me a believer. People can throw percentages all over the place. Lebron shoots a higher percentage than Kobe, but Kobe is a better jump shooter. Chauncey Billups is looked at as a good shooter and he's NEVER shot 43.7% from beyond the arc and is a career 41.6% shooter.
