Badger suspended for road games

Wisconsin sophomore tailback Lance Smith has been suspended for the Badgers' five regular-season road games this season, UW officials announced. The action, according to UW officials, is the result of a non-academic misconduct case pending against Smith for a July incident. Smith was suspended from the team on July 18 for violating the athletic department's student athlete discipline policy. The 19-year-old sophomore faces charges of battery and disorderly conduct for his alleged actions during a fight with his girlfriend.

It sounds like when I was a kid and I was grounded and only allowed to play in my own yard.

That's a shame - he hasn't plead or been found guilty. Of course, this is purely selfish reasoning - he looked AWESOME on Saturday. They could use him when they go into Happy Valley. Probably won't need him in Columbus.
But good move keeping him out Vegas this weekend - he might be tempted to steal some girl's shoes.

He should have to pay back the school for the 5 games he cheated them out of......

See wiscinson is trying to become a national power, they are even getting their players to beat up their girlfriends

Why only suspended from road games!!!!!

September 7, 2007  12:17 PM ET

I agree, strange that it is only the road games. There must be more to the story.

September 7, 2007  12:53 PM ET

Bielema said it was to keep him focused on academics - which may or may not be harder to do staying in Madison on those weekends.
-Also, this is a school suspension, not NCAA. I think 5 games is pretty stiff for a guy who has only been charged (and yet to be found guilty) w/ a misdemeanor. I think Biels will run a much tighter ship than Alvarez, especially once Barry stops his meddling.
It sounds like he just went a little too far when he was fighting with his crazy B GF about cab fare, or directions, or postmodern art.
Also, did i mention this guy's vision and cutback ability? The perfect compliment for PJ. Hope the Fiesta Bowl isn't considered a Road Game.
keep your hands off the ladies, lance.

Hum, only a misdemeanor for a strong football player to beat up a women.. What is wrong with this??????Takes a big man to hit a women!!!!!Maybe Lance should have used his vision and cutback ability to dart away from his girlfriend before he smacked her. I also would like to hear the whole story..Also why isn't the NCAA involved yet!!

September 7, 2007  02:47 PM ET

not even the most sensational account says he beat her up. Only reactionary message-board types perpetuate that stuff. The way the MJS reported on it earlier in the summer is that the girl fell down after a fight about money - that's it. It was also in public, with conflicting reports whether or not she was pushed.
I agree that no guy should ever act physically violent towards a lady, to any degree.
Personally, however, I did once date a loony tune who took a swing at me a couple times + I had to grab + restrain her to make her calm down (from a 10 to a 9). I let that relationship last about an extra 2 mos b/c I was scared she'd castrate me in my sleep if I ended it.
Anyway, that's neither here nor there. Do i think i'd like to grab a beer w/ the Lance Smith, or the Duke LaCrosse team? probably not. But the Duke story does say something for not rushing to judgment before all the facts are in.

Let the damn thing play out.

September 7, 2007  03:01 PM ET

He'll get his if he doe-popped her.

Smith was a GREAT change of pace for the Badgers last week and they need him to be with that team. I hope someone else steps up and gives them the speed they need. The defense needs to get a little better. Go Badgers tonight at 9pm CST!!!!! I
