Sneeze lands pitcher on disabled list

07:51 AM ET 07.16 | While there was speculation the Padres might shut Mat Latos down for a bit, they found a spot for him on the DL -- because of a sneeze. While walking down some steps at Coors Field in Denver last Friday, Mat Latos stifled a sneeze. That aborted sneeze led to pain in Latos' side that landed the 22-year-old pitcher on the 15-day disabled list Thursday. How convenient, since the Padres wanted to push back Latos' next start. Because his time on the disabled list officially started last Friday, Latos will be eligible to pitch July 24 in Pittsburgh. "If it had to happen at any time, this was a good time," Latos said. "They wanted to put me on a break here." Latos didn't know exactly what his injury is, although he said it was "against my ribs." "Is it a big deal?" Latos said. "That depends on how it goes and how long I'll miss. It's sore. I am not going to lie."

Baseball players make puzsies look hard-nosed.
KO'd by a sneeze... yeah that about sums up those macho men. I'm still impressed that so many of them play through their periods every month though.

Boycotting the NBA? yeah, I agree, some of the baseball injuries are pathetic. On the DL because of a sneeze, that's gotta be a first.

And didn't Clint Barmes fall and break his wrist (or his finger?) a couple of years ago hauling groceries up the stairs to his apartment? Damn, Colorado is a dangerous place. :-)

It's convenient that he scored a sneeze-related injury to put him on the DL right when the club wanted him to take time off anyway. If you need a bogus injury, at least get a paper cut or something. Maybe rub some lemon juice in there to make it look really irritated and nasty.

For those that are making fun of sneeze injuries, they're quite common. Just google it, tons of information on what can happen during a sneeze.

baseball players do get some of the most puszi-fied injuries known to mankind. I'm certain it was an excuse to limit their young stud arm......he was on pace to throw 200+ inns. with prolly never throwing anywhere near 150 inns in any season of his career.

Sneeze-related injuries might be nothing to, um, sneeze at ... but you have to admit the timing is cute.

123 innings last year. The so-called Verducci Effect relates to pitchers under 25 whose total innings increase by 30 in a year, so the prudent thing would be to limit his innings to somewhere around 155. As you pointed out, he was on pace to blow that away (195 innings), so they need to limit him by about 40 innings, which would be about 6-7 starts considering his average of 6.1 innings per start. A 15-day trip to the disabled list isn't going to get there -- especially one that's retroactive to, what, the 8th?

I can see a sneeze dropping a World Cup Soccer player to his knees, but a MLB player? Jeesh.

Quite common? Not really. Sure there are examples of ridiculous injuries related to sneezing but that doesnt make it common.
I am waiting for Borass to come up with a clause that gives his players bonuses because they avoided missing anytime during a season due to their sneezes.

If it is so common, please name one other pro athlete who has been unable to play his / her sport because of sneezing.
