Where does App. State rank?

In a significant change of policy, the Associated Press announced a major change Thursday in the voting for its college football poll. In the aftermath of Division I-AA Appalachian State knocking off then-No. 5 Michigan, 34-32, the AP has decided there should be no rule against ranking a lower-division school -- as long as that team competed against a Division I-A opponent. Only teams that were I-A (now known as Football Bowl Subdivision) were eligible under the previous poll guidelines.

They don't. They got lucky. Leave it at that. One game does not make them the all Powerfull OZ. If they lose a game this year all the smoke eveyone has been blowing up there you know what will disappear and you all will be eating your words!! Be carefull of false Idols!

Got Lucky^ It was 28-17 at the half. App St worked Michigan like cheap labor.

Im not saying App St should be in the 1-A title talk, but don't discredit their win because L. Carr can't coach.

The problem here is that this will probably be their only game against a Div I team this season (I don't have their schedule), and most Div II teams do not play outside their league. So, ranking them is just an opinion and guesswork. Their is not enough data to know for sure how they would do against the rest of the top 25.

They deserve credit for beating Michigan, but I can't see them beating many of the top 25, especially those with a defense.

What will happen is people are going to rank ASU in the bottom of the top 25, they will not lose against their lower division rivals, and we have another Boise State on our hands. As a sports fan I am for anything that creates a little bit of controversy with the BCS. Give me a playoff already! Also, as a UM fan, it looks better at the end of the year when your only loss is against a ranked team.

September 7, 2007  10:01 AM ET

It is simple...use that no-fail scientifically based formula that we have and rank at T25 with whoever else is at 25...BRILLIANT AP!!!!!!!!!!!!

September 7, 2007  10:10 AM ET

I loved the game as much as anyone, and AppState has a fantastic I-AA program, but what is the point of ranking them?

I-AA schools have their own ranking system and their own postseason play. Putting AppState in the top 25 does nothing.

September 7, 2007  10:27 AM ET

Where does Michigan rank in the I-AA system? They lost to the top I-AA school by 2 points. That's not so bad. UM should at least be in the 20-25 range.

This is silly. If they were to be ranked it should have been after week 1. After that they'd get pushed down by more and more teams going 2-0, 3-0, and 4-0, because those teams are playing tougher opponents.

September 7, 2007  10:28 AM ET

lol....this is like ranking Louisville in the Top 25....no wait...

September 7, 2007  11:08 AM ET

Great win for App State plus being 1AA champs the last 2 years...they deserve the praise....GOOOOOO MOUNTAINEERS!!!!!!!!!!!!!

September 7, 2007  11:36 AM ET

can this all stop now? they arent that good, one game....cmon.

September 7, 2007  11:48 AM ET

If they had more top 25 teams on there schedule and they defeated them then I could give this more thought, but they beat an over rated Michigan team. Let this go already

September 7, 2007  11:55 AM ET

I am as big a BLUE fan as anyone, they beat us and they beat us good. It hurts to say that but that is the truth. They did not get "lucky" we were not prepared and lost on our turf.
Carr should commit suicide like the Japanese do, fall on a sword!

September 7, 2007  12:36 PM ET

Brutal Hammered, but honest.

September 7, 2007  12:58 PM ET

Play just one Div I opponent to qualify for rankings? Just doesn't make sense. T25 should just stay the way it is. And better said, T25 is a purely Div. I ranking system.

However, I think preseason rankings are meaningless and just give an advantage to monied programs with a history that may or may not be relevant to their current program. Rankings should start after the first game when pollsters can see how teams actually played. This way no team gets a head start, which pre-season rankings unfairly (and way too often, inaccurately) end up doing.

September 7, 2007  01:12 PM ET

Don't you think that excessive Hammered?

September 7, 2007  01:27 PM ET

Lloyd Carr will be valmorphized.

September 7, 2007  01:46 PM ET

Hammered that is brutal. Let's move on to our next games.
After all Saturday is less than 12 hours away. And Thanks wvueer!! Go Mountaineers beat those L-R Bears!!!! It's good to be a Mountaineer!!!

September 7, 2007  01:51 PM ET

Just put them on at Number 25 because they did beat Michigan. Michigan did not lose, they were beaten by the victorious Appalachian State.

As a fan of Big Blue they need to put it behind them and beat Oregon. Carr needs to tell them, look we blew one and the national championship is gone. Lets go to Pasadena, Boys!!

Or if you all saw what Lou Holtz's prep talk I would give that one too if I was Carr. It was pretty good.

September 7, 2007  02:04 PM ET

To win on Saturday, though Carr had better be more prepared for a spread offense. Oregon uses the same offense that ASU plays. If they don't win this one, Carr should consider resigning.

September 7, 2007  02:11 PM ET

I like the new rating. It'll keep the Div 1-A schools on their toes if a 1-AA school start to out rank them.

Can't wait to see Texas State and Delaware Fightin Blue Hens scare the day lights out of USC, Texas LSU and Florida.

Go Ivy League Conference LOL HA HA HA HA HA HA
