04:22 AM ET 09.07 | Cardinals outfielder Rick Ankiel, baseball's feel-good story of the season, received a 12-month supply of human growth hormone in 2004 from a Florida pharmacy that was part of a national illegal prescription drug-distribution operation, the Daily News has learned. Ankiel, 28, has not been accused by authorities of wrongdoing, and according to the Signature records obtained by The News, he stopped receiving HGH just before Major League Baseball officially banned it in 2005. MLB does not test for HGH, but a player who is known to have used it or even possessed it from the time it was banned can face a 50-game suspension.

I'm a bit disappointed, but:
1. Apparently he had a valid prescription (albeit from a shady source)
2. It was OK with baseball during the time he took it.
Disappointed, but certainly not surprised. I wonder who else is on the list?

Agree with thisandthat. As long as it wasn't banned back then, there should be no reason for concern. If Giambi's given a pass for using 'roids before the harsh suspensions were set, then Ankiel deserves a pass too.

I have to agree also with the fact that technically he did nothing wrong. However, I absolutely HATE that these guys were taking this crap, even if it wasn't specifically banned by baseball at the time. So while I don't feel they should be punished, it's almost like watching a criminal get off on a technicality.

And, he doesn't take it now. He shouldn't be suspended; Giambi wasn't

Honestly...who cares?
I really don't...just hit the ball hard, collect your millions, and deal with whatever health complications arise later.

So how is this different from the Barry Bonds situation? Its pretty obvious that Bonds was not using steriods back in '05, so why people still label him a cheater but are willing to overlook Giambi and now Ankiel?

I agree with eightwonda, and even though I am a white man, I have a strong guess...

It doesn't matter if it was banned or not. It was still illegal and if he were getting it for legimate reasons he would have had to have a medical waiver. I was suspicious but this disgusts me. He's no better than Bonds, McGwire or any of the others. If you're into baseball, your heroes are dead.

Like I said I hate baseball, there are no "heroes" anymore, there are HGH and steroids, those are your "heroes" thank them for your homeruns and scoreless innings and such. No one over looks Giambi eightwonda, he is just not in your face breaking records.. I can only read about the sport and be disappointed.

Just because it wasn't specifically banned by baseball doesn't mean it wasn't against the law. To say it's less reprehensible because performance-enhancers were still being ignored in '04 is ludicrous.

This is the first one that "hurts" for me. With the others that have happened, I almost expected it, or just didn't care about the player. This was a great story, and no matter how you feel about it, the story has changed.

how can you have a prescription for something that is illegal?.....stocked in a pharmacy?
Steroids in and of themsleves are not illegal, neither is HGH. its the abuse of these substances while not under a doctors care, that are illegal. Buying them from Jimmy the Juicehead in the lockeroom of your gym....Now thats illegal.
I think it will be interesting to see what happens when the sports world is confronted with the 'legitimate ' use of steroids in basic health issues. Do you ban a guy because he has an allergic reaction to something and is prescribed steroids as part of a treatment regiment?

Yeah, sure guys. Go ahead and excuse him for it. Go ahead and say, "It wasn't against the rules at the time, so it's no big deal."
Just make sure you no longer spew hatred at Mark McGwire, because the stuff he was doing wasn't against the rules at the time either. Double standard much?
It seems a little silly to me that people don't care when the middle of the road athletes juice up but when the successful ones do they scream bloody murder. Either call them all cheaters or forgive them all. As far as I'm concerned there is no middle ground.

Just to let you guys know, Marijuana isn't banned by baseball either, and I'm sure people would be up in arms if they heard he toked up ever night. Not that I would, but i know many would. Also, this is no different from Bonds, as Bonds was using before they were made illegal by baseball, yet everyone still calls him a cheater and villifies him because he's an ****. I never wanted to believe it, but maybe, just maybe people didnt want Bonds to do it because of race....

Dkzone, I think you need to take those rose colored glasses off. Ever think that maybe the prescription wasn't legitimate? That's just a little illegal.
