Ex-Patriots WR calls Cowboys

The agent for WR Reche Caldwell contacted the Cowboys yesterday. Caldwell led Patriots' receivers with 760 yards and four TDs last season but was cut after New England significantly upgraded its WR corps. Wade Phillips should know Caldwell well. The Chargers drafted Caldwell with their second-round pick in 2002, and he had four mostly mediocre seasons in San Diego. But he left a much better impression on Phillips the last time they met. Caldwell had seven catches for 80 yards and a TD in the Patriots' playoff win over the Chargers. Caldwell isn't considered a great deep threat, but he had a 49-yard catch to set up New England's winning field goal.

They need to show a picture of his eyes. Buggy!!!

with glenn's situation, and TO's stability issues, the boys would be served well to sign Caldwell for this season.

September 8, 2007  11:52 AM ET

Whoever gets him would be getting one heck of an uderrated player.

September 8, 2007  12:15 PM ET

I think they should sign him. They're too close to being a contender for the superbowl to take a chance on the inexperience they have at the number three receiver spot. Caldwell would be a good number three receiver for them and if Crayton doesn't cut it as number two or gets hurt then I think Caldwell would do fine as the number two.

I agree, if Glenn cant go, Caldwell would be a decent signing.

September 8, 2007  12:30 PM ET

NI!

Depending on Glenn's status, they might need someone to fill in. Crayton is a solid #3, but he'd need someone behind him. Too bad they cut Urban.

I hope he does sign with Dallas because the Jets were sniffing around him and I dont want him in our division as a Pat's fan.I became a big fan of his last year, yeah he had some key drops but still an all around good reciever.

September 8, 2007  02:01 PM ET

I don't know if Caldwell is that much better than the Cowboys third WR Sam Hurd or even fourth WR Miles Austin. At some point these guys have got to step up and prove their worth. I think signing Caldwell would be stopping any progress that might be made by those young WR. It's only week 1, it's no time to panic. Now if Hurd and Austin can't assert themselves as a solid #3 then maybe in a few weeks look to sign a free agent or possibly look to trade for a quality #3. Maybe Glenn will be back by then, and Crayton can go back to his #3 spot and all would be well.

September 8, 2007  02:23 PM ET

I agree with the dirty detective.

He's not a great receiver, but he isn't that bad either. He'd help fill out the Dallas corps, and they would do well to sign him.

September 8, 2007  03:02 PM ET

Patrick Crayton will definitely sabotage this deal. He wants to emerge as the #1 WR after TO successfully commits suicide this year and Glenn is transferred to a nursing home.

September 8, 2007  04:02 PM ET

This just makes my head spin.

September 8, 2007  04:30 PM ET

I said it right after they cut him that the boys should give him a call and see if he'd be interested.

September 8, 2007  04:58 PM ET

The Boys would be a good pickup.

September 8, 2007  05:06 PM ET

steady player but those two drops in the AFC Championship game last year kills his playoff reliability factor.

September 8, 2007  07:13 PM ET

two HUGE drops....He catches at least one of them Pats would be defending champs

September 8, 2007  10:02 PM ET

If they want an average WR, there he is.

September 8, 2007  10:04 PM ET

Speculation, Celtics fan. I guess the defense didn't have anything to do with it. Every team made at least 2 mistakes in their playoff games. Welcome to the next season :)

September 8, 2007  10:25 PM ET

Caldwell will be a good deal for the Cowboys and provides insurance and depth to the team.

September 8, 2007  10:46 PM ET

He's a good pick up. With all the defensive concentration on T.O., he would find himself open in the zone... a lot!

September 8, 2007  10:53 PM ET

Reche Sucks...I would rather have Keenan McCardell.
