Phils dealing for star pitcher?

07:31 AM ET 07.21 | Ruben Amaro Jr. "hinted" Tuesday he may move to fill Kyle Kendrick's spot in the rotation -- whether by big-name trade or J.A. Happ, who recorded only 44 pitches Tuesday at Class AAA Lehigh Valley. The quick hook would suggest that the Phils are lining him up to pitch Saturday -- if they can't make a trade. Baseball officials familiar with the Phillies' thinking say the club would still like to add a high-end starter that it could control beyond this season. Houston's Roy Oswalt and Arizona's Dan Haren are two available pitchers that fit that description. Interestingly, Oswalt is scheduled to pitch on Saturday.

he is trying to make up his big mistake of not keeping lee,now he will fork out more money..he made some great moves and some very very poor ones

I think he's got a lot more work to do this year. The way his staff has been pitching he's got more issues than a 5th starter that didn't cut it.

Oswalt or Haren in Philly would change the NL pennant battle. Right now, they don't have the starting pitching to get it done.

i never did understand why they didn't keep cliff lee? they wouldn't be in this situation looking for a pitcher and now they'll have to deal quality prospects.

He traded Lee for PROSPECTS. Something 99% of Philly fans have no concept of. As a fan who watched the Philles in the late '90's and early '00's, I don't blame the man for not wanting the cupboard to run bare. To acquire Halladay and keep Lee would've cleaned out almost the entire prospect pool in the Phillies system. That was something he wasn't willing to do. At least not at the time.

And what I don't understand is, even with Lee in red pinstripes this year, the Phils would only have maybe 2 or 3 more wins. Kendrick was 6-5, if I'm not mistaken, and didn't get great run support in about half his starts. Having Cliff Lee wouldn't have made that big of a difference, with the exception of starting the season with TWO starters on the DL instead of 1, and having THREE on the DL for 2 or 3 weeks once Happ got hurt.

Suprisingly, for the first time in a LONG time, the whole starting rotation has been carrying their own weight. Their offense is the biggest problem. But, considering they've only had their starting lineup in tact for 10 games all season, what do you expect?

They'll need Haren and Oswalt, plus at least one of their other starters to start performing. And they'll need some help in the bullpen as well. And don't forget that Utley is out until September. It's just not going to happen for them this year.

propects come and go brother phan,if you have the right team you run with it....half of these prospects dont even pan out..there is not a roy or lee that comes around often take it and run you only get one shot..

Oswalt needs to consider the poaching possibilities of the greater Philadelphia area. Seriously, this guy looks like a **** hick

I can resign myself to that fact if it happens. This year was injury plagued, and ontop of that, the offense that has been in tact just hasn't performed. But starting pitching, with the exception of an under-achieving Joe Blanton, hasn't been a problem at all this year. For once.

They wouldn't have the right team this year, even with Lee. 10 starts with a full starting line-up. TEN! That's 83 games, SO FAR, with at least one person out of the line-up. Sure, with the line-up we have, a guy or two out shouldn't efefct it much. But when you throw in the fact that other key members of the line-up are just not producing to desired amounts, it looks sad. There's a reason so few teams get to back-to-back-to-back fall classics. It's taxing.

Even still, there's still about 70 games left. Plenty of time, espeically with the Braves and Mets ahead of us, for the Phils to gain ground. If there's a team out there capable of going red-hot and gaining ground, it's the Phillies. All they need is a little spark to actually ignite.

agreed, get that flare back another trip, asoon as chase gets back and happ shows up like lastyear charlie is usually good at getting the best out of his players..i know werth would be a distraction this year with his contract bring brown up werth for oswalt and let the games begin

Not sure how you say that when Kendrick (ERA near 5) was just dropped to AAA and Happ has been injured. Hamels 7-7 3.63 has been fair. Moyer 9-9 4.84 is just bad. Plus Blanton's 6+ ERA. Outside of Halladay, and to some extent Hamels, that rotation's not much.
