Raiders, Russell 'close' to signing

Posted: Saturday September 08, 2007 08:28AM ET

Raiders officials met face-to-face in Oakland with representatives for JaMarcus Russell on Friday, with one source saying they were "close" to getting the No. 1 overall draft pick signed. Both sides worked into late Friday night to settle their differences over a contract that's believed to be worth $61 million over six years.

Jeez, I hope JaMarcus can get by on $61 million. I hope the Raiders trade him and get some assets. Some help on the offensive line would be a nice part of a trade deal.

Who cares???? Sign him and then Call ATL and see what they will give up for him....Maybe Warrick Dunn, a 2nd and 3rd round round pick next year???? Do it, we dont need him......

"Who cares????"

Great point djrox. What kind of an ugratefull ahole holds out this long? I mean he had to have known that he was going to make bank no matter what deal he signed. It's insulting to the game. I hope he doesn't play a single down this year.

Report Offensive Comment

I hope he does Andres and shows the league what a bust he will be.

61 million over 6 years is Peyton Manning / Tom Brady kind of money. I don't think there's a single other player (maybe Dwight Freeney) that makes that much.

He's a rookie. A frickin rookie. The way this rookie pay scale has gotten out of hand is ridiculous. The veterans in this league who've earned their pay must be incensed watching this travesty.

I hope he breaks his leg!

61 mil for this rookie? Are you kidding me? His best football years are behind him. We schooled his **** in the Swamp.

Report Offensive Comment

A prediction. If Russell is the next Ryan Leaf, and I think he will be, there will be a move by Goodell to push the owners and the union to put an end to these ridiculous contracts.

Report Offensive Comment

Wow Lana. I hope that he fails miserably and his family changes their name to not be associated with the biggest bust in history, but that's a little scary.

Report Offensive Comment

CAP the rooks salaries! It's gotta end somewhere, why not here? This is getting unbelievably ridiculous!Rookies have a chance to make millions on endorsements and they also want this outrageous $$$$$ to not even play till a year later!?!So what's the 1st rounder gonna get next year?I would even hate to think what the "next" salary will produce next year!I say wait till after the 1st game, then come back with a lower offer. He will stand to lose money more and more after each game.Raiders are in no hurray now.why not?He will be be just holding a clipboard anyway.

I hate to say this, but most of my fellow Raiders fans on this board are idiots. We're not trading JaMarcus. Wake the F* up. He will be signed soon, probably this week, quite possibly today, and he will be on the team for at least 3-4 years, (Im guessing quite a bit longer) and will obviously be given the oppertunity to prove himself worth the bank breaking contract. He's a significantly better option for the future at QB AKA "the most important player on the field" than DC, JM or AW. Significantly. He may be a bust but only time will tell; quite a few people thought Leaf would be better than Manning and we saw how that worked out, and remember Manning was the #1 over all, not Leaf. (Sorry Brownies.)
While the contract is a monstrosity, (and the NFL should and I think will soon implement an NBA style rookie pay scale) the contract is for 6 years and in later years will not look as outlandish as it does now, especially if JaMarcus lives up to expectations. To my nation, for all of you hating the guy over the holdout, chill out & grow up. Russell is the future, and it's a brighter future for him.

marcus is willing to sign now that pre-season is over and each regular season game played will cost him 1/17th of a contract this year.

whats that say about the motivation driving your #1 pick?

Report Offensive Comment

He's worth way more than that. Did everyone forget, he's going to be the greatest QB to ever play in the NFL. The richest too!!

Report Offensive Comment

He "MAY" be our future, but at what price? Is it worth it?I guess we will see.......

To much hate'n, jealousy, and wannabzzzzz. Boys, it's a business - plain and simple. And, if you know business you wouldn't be whinning. Get a life:)

Report Offensive Comment

He's probably a bust waiting to happen anyway!
Don't give him a penny more than what they offered.
He's the only one that can lose in this situation

The Raiders are stupid....I think there should be a rookie pay scale though. Prove your worth ON the field, and then get paid BIG money later. Seems fair to me.

Report Offensive Comment

His first major contribution when he signs should be to the University of Notre Dame. If not for them he probably was a late 1st round draft pick, maybe somewhere in the middle of the 1st round. But the Notre Dame game alone made him the number 1 pick.

Good point...it is what ever the market will bear...also, in most sports, the first player taken is usually difficult to sign...I use the Brady Quinn example again...he went 22nd over all but held out because he wanted top ten pick money...The kid is young and will(better)do well for the "raidas"

Report Offensive Comment

Keep in mind that in this case, the "market" is the Raiders and the Raiders alone. So they're ultimately the ones that will dictate the economics of the situation.
